Hi Richard,

This would be an interesting challenge for the Mix Rescue team. PM me or email sam AT soundonsound DOT com if you're interested in us having a go at it...

Yes, getting a professional to mix a track would be a very good way forward.
Depends of which reverbs you use. Today's reverbs, based on good algorithms or convolution technology plus good IRs, sound just great.

I look forward to hearing the outcome of this collaboration/Mix Rescue!

Another thing I find illuminating when I feel I'm 'reaching the limits' is how creatives re-interpret existing songs by other musicians. Here's one that fascinated me recently.

Here's the original song - 'A Little Bit of Madness' by talented UK guitarist/songwriter/blogger Mary Spender.

Now listen to the remix from Electronic Producer Rachel K Collier (including details on how she put it together).

As I say, really inspirational (to me anyway ;))

This is very clever, but it doesn't sound anything like the original which I personally prefer, but that doesn't matter really.

I just can't help thinking that we are watching (metaphorically) someone taking a draft novel of the Famous Five and turning it into a blood and guts action thriller.

I'm also very worried about the amount of room treatment on that producers front wall. I mean shouldn't there be more rockwool and sand?

Joking aside, it makes me uncomfortable, but I'm sure it pays some bills.

Possibly the speakers are there for show and most of the work happens with headphones? :)

Good point
But seriously, who would do that to promote serious work?

Martin
Sorry for off topic, but I want to know which speakers are these, isn't that PreSonus? ANyway, I'm a little bit familiar with them, so just wanted to know, if anyone knows...
My room doesn't have any rockwool and any sand in front of my wall too, but that doesn't make me do bad mixes as they get professinally into commerce.

Focal Alphas.

And trust me, you'll get a lot more work if you get a load of Rockwool and sand in your room.

I had a listen to the 2 versions. I didn’t watch how the track was assembled.
I prefer the second clubby version even though it’s predictable and a bit cliche but nicely done. The first version has some strange clashes of melody notes with the chords which feels to me, and I could be off base, not quite worked through enough. I love the sound of the voice but the clashes undermine it in those places where it should be supported. My taste leans more to pushing the envelope but here the beauty isn’t what it could be.

I preferred the remix - more power and more interest. I thought it was great. The original was good, but the remix was better. Thanks for sharing this, Martin.

Sam has remixed the track - it won’t make mix rescue but we’re sharing both versions on the forum.....

The original:

The re-mix:

Thanks, Sam!

Percussion seems a lot 'cleaner' and more detailed, and the stereo positioning seems more defined.
Oh, nice track :)
