DrAlienSmith Releases the Subkick-01 Low Frequency Microphon

Postby DrAlienSmith » Thu Jan 04, 2018 2:07 am

The Subkick-01 Low Frequency Microphone is based on the classic speaker mic or 'subkick' design. These mics specialize in capturing very low bass frequencies, and in combination with other mics, add amazing low end punch to sources such as kick drums and bass amps.

Anyone can make a speaker mic, just wire a speaker up to a mic cable and there you have it. Unfortunately most DIY attempts aren't optimized for mic level and mounting it to a mic stand is always a problem.

With our design we utilize a low output wattage, full range 6.5" speaker in combination with a vented bamboo shell which provides mechanical air damping. Both of these elements ensure that the Subkick-01 runs at a safe output level (similar to a condensor mic) so you can plug it into any mic preamp without the need of a DI. The Subkick-01 also features Canare cable on the inside, a Neutrik xlr connector on the outside and a built on mic clip to mount it on any mic stand.

The Subkick-01 is hand assembled here in Perth, Australia and it is selling in the DrAlienSmith Reverb Store for $110 AUS (roughly $85 US, 72 Euro) plus shipping to anywhere in the world.

You can check out a test audio file of a 15 second drum loop repeated 8 times to show what the Subkick-01 can do on a kick drum, link below. Read the description and the timed comments on soundcloud to see which mics are used and which ones are active during each loop.

(Remember to listen to it with good quality headphones or speakers as the main benefit of using the Subkick-01 is in the LOW frequencies which you WON'T hear through your phone or laptop speakers.)

New demo vid of the Subkick-01 vs Yamaha SKRM-100 SubKick is now up on youtube.

At 2:00 minutes into the video I do a simple A/B comparison with both mics on a kick drum.
