New Gefell microphone - M 102 omni

Postby John Willett » Mon Jan 28, 2019 1:23 pm

Microtech Gefell have a new microphone.

The M 102

Image

It uses the same body as the M 221 but with a 1" measurement grade capsule instead of the ½" one of the M 221.

The capsule has a nickel diaphragm that is "grown in place" to make it integral with the body.

Full details are HERE

And the Data Sheet is HERE

A demo pair should be in the UK in February and SOS are first on the list to have them for review - they will also be shown at the BVE exhibition in Excel on the 26th to 28th February.

Purely out of curiosity John, is the capsule interchangeable with the M221?

Yes - I have already had someone who has a pair of M 221 asking for only the MK 102 and A 63 adaptor so he can use them on his M 221 bodies.

No problem - it's the same body and both capsules have a 200V bias voltage (supplied via a DC/DC converter in the body).

Aha, yes, I had a nice chat with the man on the Gefell booth at NAMM about this. Looks very nice as you'd expect. He said there was particular interest from people doing 3D audio stuff with large multi-mic arrays, because conventional small-diaphragm omnis are too noisy in that application.

Makes sense I guess... although that would necessitate spaced multimic arrays which opens a whole can of worms for phase-incoherent fold-downs...

The arrays they were showing on the stand were scary -- huge great things with mics arranged at the corners of a metre-square cube, that sort of thing. I would hazard that mono compatibility is not top of the priority list for people recording that way!

Yes - they showed the array at IBC in September and also at the Neumann 90th anniversary just after (Gefell are still owned by Neumann's original 1928 company).

The array used 5 x M 102 microphones (set like a 5.0 rig) on the lower level and 4 x M 221 microphones on the upper level to record 3D sound (I suppose a bit like the late Mike Skeet's experiments which sounded superb).

It was because the university doing the experiments decided to use the measurement M 102 microphone and it worked so well that Gefell decided to release it as a recording mic. In fact I was just about to suggest to them that they do exactly this when they told me thay had come to the same decision.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a pair.

FYI - I will have an M 102 on the Sound-Link stand at BVE next week (Feb. 26th to 28th) in ExCel if you want to see it in the flesh.

You can get your free BVE ticket HERE
