Stairway to Heaven lawsuit ... Taurus?

Postby alexis » Thu Mar 26, 2015 1:38 am

Led Zeppelin loses first round in Stairway to Heaven Lawsuit

Instantly recognizable ... they probably did rip it off (as they toured together, presumaby after Spirit recorded "Taurus" and LZ did STH).

I have no idea if that means they owe them money legally though. But why wait so long?

First legal skirmish establishes: That LZ don't live in Pennsylvania, and that the fact is unimportant to the case.

Stay tuned!

Some similarities but Stairway has an ascending + descending line rather than just a descending line so arpeggios on quite different chords. And 'Taurus' strongly reminds me of another earlier sixties song, (possible a Leonard Cohen one), so are the Spirit estate going to be sued in turn?

... and the vultures swoop in to pick the bones of long dead carcasses.

I can imagine that the legal profession has made more money from the music business than musicians have.

Still strictly project but lately on the run.

The only similarity I can hear is the semitone by semitone descending bassline on the acc. guitar. The arpeggios are different and the resolution is different. Does this mean no one can use a semitone by semitone descending bassline without paying royalties to Spirit?

You can't copyright a couple of chords on a guitar. Shameless money grabbing.

Don't think I've ever heard that Taurus tune before, but just had a listen and that 'Cello part does rather remind me of a Cohen track - is it Avalanche you were thinking of, from Songs of Love and Hate?

I think both owe a nod to Blue Skies by Irving Berlin.

Gaye vs Thicke gas shown that you can be sued for using the same "sonic signature" or "feel". On that basis Spirit have good case.

From what I have read and based on this quote, it was about the music not the 'feel'.

The trial focused on detailed analyses of chords and notes in both Blurred Lines and Got to Give It Up.

Jurors repeatedly heard the upbeat song Blurred Lines and saw snippets of its music video, but Gaye’s music was represented during the trial in a less polished form. Jurors did not hear Got to Give It Up as Gaye recorded it, but rather a version created based solely on sheet music submitted to gain copyright protection.

On that basis, I reckon Robert Johnson's estate should be billionaires by now, Justin Timberlake should be sued by Prince Jackson for mimicking his "dad" and the list GOES ON AND ON.

Stairway sounds like Taurus, no doubt. Those are the same notes at the beginning aren't they? Did Liam G. get sued for Don't look Back? Those opening chords on the piano are straight off Imagine....

No, the Gaye vs Thicke case was entirely about the 'sheet music' aspects (see the previous thread about this).

And so it goes to trial .

No statute of limitations? That was a long time ago. "All the money's been spent!" :)

Radio 4 had a segment on this today. Several purported rip-offs were demonstrated. Only one sounded even vaguely similar to me, and a Chuck Berry riff is pretty generic.

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, dont. Go fishing instead.

It says it does not apply since the song was remastered in 2014.

I heard the Taurus snippet when this first came out and it makes no sense - they really dont sound much like each other at all, but then a jury is not necessarily competent on the matter.. would think that the old Zep estate could afford better lawyers tough. Guess that if Peter Grant were still alive, we would hear some shouting..
