Arrangement of popular song, and royalties?

Postby MeganMcDuffee » Tue May 23, 2017 11:53 pm

Hey there,

I've recently gotten a client who wants a new arrangement of a popular song done for violin/piano. My question, (assuming she secures written permission to arrange the song from the copyright owners), is this: as the arranger, am I entitled to any backend/performance royalties? The piano part especially will essentially be a new composition.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Cheers,
Megan

No, not if the song itself is still in copyright.
