How Musos Game Streaming Sites and Everyone Games Listeners

Postby dubbmann » Sun Jul 09, 2017 7:58 pm

Hi all,

Just finished reading a very interesting article on the subject of the games going on in the music promotion/production biz now that streaming is a big part of bands' revenue stream (pun intended ;-) Lots of stuff that y'all may be familiar to you but was news to me (almost officially geriatric now that I've got arthritis).

Like all the musos who post songs w/ almost famous titles, or use almost famous artist names, both of which attract zillions of listeners who are searching for the real thing but get fooled by the search results. Or do customized covers (100,000s of "Happy BIrthday" out there apparently with insert your name in the lyrics). Or why many real artists are releasing albums w/ 30+ tracks to goose their "sales" and get to platinum status easier (hello, Chris Brown, I always knew you were a P.O.S. but really....). Or the streaming services actually hiring producers to make some of these things for an upfront fee and then not have to pay the wopping 1/2 cent per stream.

Fascinating read w/ plenty of links to supporting docs, articles, etc. Here's the URL

BTW, Vulture is part of NY Magazine so no fear that it's a malware honeytrap.

Cheers,

d

Hmmm, it's an interesting article, but I can't help but feel it would have been both a better read and a more powerful piece if it wasn't so overtly anti-streaming.
A few of the comments show where the author has clearly got a bit lost in their tracks, e.g. "Never before has a song title or artist name been more important than the actual songs themselves. " Patently the artist name has always been critical, and how many times has either Ryan Adams or Bryan Adams lost or gained an accidental sale?
The whole thing about recording recent hits as covers is really no different to how most buskers and pub bands ply their trade either.
Worth a read though :)

The ups and downs of a free market I guess. Sometimes businesses fail, sometimes business models fail, and sometimes whole industries fail.
But people will still make and play music.
Personally I'm more worried about net neutrality but that's a different thread. ;)

I'm assuming the word "game" is a verb.
Sometimes it feels like I'm still learning my first language which is English. :o
