I'll chuck a tenner into the kitty to get the ball rolling....

I hope the new owners will get on well with the neighbours!

Air has been for sale since about 49BC. Problem - the building is under a covenant - it MUST remain a recording studio. Any change in use and the Pentecostal Church can claim it back. It's on a 99 year lease.

Recording studios do not earn money, or as Mr. Boote (one of the owners of Air) told me once "The trouble with this place is that I can only sell it 365 days a year!"

i.e. recording studios are not scalable!

I've been keeping an eye on this story for years. I can't tell you how much I'd love to record in that space! Here's my tenner...

A genuine question: some of the successful singer/songwriters are so rich, in the region of $200 - 550 million, I am surprised they don't consider it.
If I were that rich I would buy a studio and a Buchla synthesizer (and a really good shortwave radio).

They don't consider it because there are far more rewarding ways of investing their money with a lot less hassle.

The first thing your groovy, windswept rock god does nowadays, is to build their own studio which doubles as a rehearsal place. Everybody has their own studio today and some of these are jaw-droppingly good. Moreover, these places are geared to the needs of their owners and allow the owners to produce other acts.

Add to that, the fact that many venues, as well as the big orchestras and choirs usually have their own recording equipment and you see why there is even less work for studios, to the point where if you are a studio owner, you have a choice - either you diversify (we have a music school and are starting a film studio) or you just give up, switch it all off and turn the lights out.

Buying a Ferrari has a better return on investment.

Not sure I want a ferrari, but by the same token, if I had that amount of cash kicking around I'd do as TRB suggests and just build my own studio. :)

If you build a studio at a motorway service station, musicians of a certain age can sing 2-4-6-8 Motorway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGrnEc_3mYo as they speed along the M6 to the studio. Was that the TRB you meant?

No, but it has about the same mileage (pun intended) as a normal commercial studio business model.
