Are scores tax deductible ?

Postby Gone To Lunch » Mon Dec 17, 2018 12:20 am

I bought a few Dover scores of well-known classical pieces and the relevant CDs as I am trying to teach myself orchestration. I am currently registered with HMRC as a self-employed composer. Is the cost of these scores and CDs tax deductible ?

Yes, I'd say they were a legitimate business expense.

The scores should be but sometimes the Inland Revenue say only a proportion of the CD cost is tax deductible.
There is a story David Bedford told (I think I have remembered it accurately) about when he claimed a large number of vinyl records of contemporary classical music against tax. The tax inspector said that they were also for pleasure so not deductible. David Bedford said he would give them to the tax inspector and he could decide if anyone would ever listen to them for pleasure.

Yes, perfectly legitimate business expense. Part of your on-going professional development.

In case you are interested...

You used to be able to get the workbook and cassette for the OU course Elements of Music: Unit 16, Orchestration quite affordably but I can't find a current reference to this.

Agreed to all of the above - I've successfully claimed back both the cost of scores and CDs from the taxman over the years.
