If your computer got a virus data could get wiped, and it will wipe both drives. Probably not very comforting to imagine these scenarios :) but -- user error reults in deleting files that shouldn't have been deleted, spill liquid in the computer and electrically wreck both drives, an accident damages the computer ...

My backups are not connected to the computer -- they're in a box. The received wisdom is that if they're spun up at least once a year they won't seize.

The bulletproof backup scenario is to also have a backup off-site.

Or if you are seriously anal or have no life like my buddy - 5 copies of every HD, some off-site, a hard drive spin up and update party every month or so (his excuse to drink a lot!)
He says somebody will have to work really hard to take him down!
He needs a girlfriend I’d say. :D

Oh, I see. Thanks for the explanation. I've always backed up to an external drive. Just one. That will have to do it for me, more than that makes me feel paranoic. But that's just me, of course...
