Logic colorizer app -- anyone tried?

Postby Dr Huge Longjohns » Sat Nov 25, 2017 12:41 pm

This, in theory, looks brilliant. A way to add new colours, themes to Logic Pro X without going deep into the software. Anyone tried it?

You're not going deep into the software but Colorizer does, I suspect. I seem to recall LX has folders of resources that are used to build the GUI and if you change those files then you change the appearance of the GUI. I've long wondered why Apple doesn't actively include re-skinning in the product - but then doing so would be giving the end user some control and Apple always knows best about GUI design.

I suspect that every time you update Logic you'll have to re-skin the GUI.

Maybe it's like banging your head against the proverbial wall but I've got more-or-less used to the GUI now.

They're not exactly busting a gut to sell this thing, either. Here's there, um, sales video, all 14 seconds of it!!! Don't blink.

I agree they are not doing much effort to promote their product.
I actually found about it as someone posted on the Logic Pro X facebook page.

It seems two articles have been written by one of the guy who developed this application, they relate about Logic GUI :

https://medium.com/@arnaudlamy/logic-pr ... 2b847208e8

https://medium.com/@arnaudlamy/flat-des ... e8b7df6bf4

I'd be inclined to buy once their are more reviews about it.

I've never seen any GUI mods for LPX that were better aesthetically or in usability than the Apple-designed interface - and most I've seen are trains wrecks of novelty and poor consistency.

Plus, even time Logic get a new version, you have to reapply your mods to the various config files, and hope none of them were changed too much in format between versions. Just one more headache to manage, really.

If you desperately *have* to change the colour of something (not everything can be changed), and can't trust yourself to edit the files directly, then I guess it could be useful, but if you're using this thing to give Logic a new look every few weeks I'm not not sure I think that's a good idea.

And this is from someone who used to modify Logic a fair amount - my old LP7 was quite tastefully customised with ice blue metering which was great, but even I don't bother to mod Logic these days...

Desmond,

I really get you point, Apple knows what is best overall for its customers, but not everybody share the exact same sight and and liking for the interface.
That is I guess why adobe provide different built-in GUI color themes.

Moreover, from LP9 to LPX the UI changed so much, its hard to believe (following your premise) that at the time of LP9 they provided the best possible interface. I can remember the 10.3 update looking also quite different. So LPX too can be improved .

I personally would like to have more control over the the gui without going overboard, but rather to make some value stick out a little more.

So I actually bought yesterday evening, have not used it yet, will give it a spin and share my insights.

Sure. If others want to mod away, that's up to them.

I just want to be able to turn certain regions and markers white again.
Perhaps Apple thinks giving us real white will show how dull all the other colours currently are. But then, doesn't Apple know best? .........

Just a heads up people, I ended up buying it, and I am having a lot of fun with it.

Once you have paid the app, there are countless templates (they call "themes") you can download and modify to your need.

Their idea of adding color to the piano roll grid is very useful as edits my beats manually.

And it is cheap!

I am happy with it.

Sounds great!
Can you choose any colour you want? Or are you limited to apple's choices?

What happens to modified colours when you apply a Logic update? Are they untouched or do you have to re-apply them? Does the colorizer app itself need updating in line with (or presumably following behind) updates to Logic?

TIA

Yes, the resource files that are modified get replaced when Logic is updated, and need to be reapplied.

If the resource files have changed between Logic versions, then the program will need to be updated to handle it otherwise you may break certain files Logic is loading.

That's what I feared. Think I'll leave it but it's a nice and tempting idea. The current Logic UI is better than before but there are still areas of darkness I'd like to lighten up, and ice blue metering sounds very cool.

Hey guys,

ManFromGlass wrote:Sounds great!

Yes you can pick any colors, within the app there is a color wheel much like in Photoshop.

ConcertinaChap wrote:What happens to modified colours when you apply a Logic update?

When I updated from 10.3 to 10.4, the colours went back to Logic's standard UI. So I open colorizer and applied my theme (they are like templates saved and separate from Logic)...its just take 3 seconds that's it.

On gearslutz I read that the app does not suffer from Logic's updates. I used the same version of Colorizer for 10.3 and 10.4, and it worked.

So far so good!
