Comparing folders in Finder...

Postby molecular » Tue Jul 31, 2018 9:10 am

Q. for Mac finder window fans.... I have one folder with 1300 files in it, and another which has those 1300 plus another 300 files in it. There's no particular pattern to what the extra ones are, such as date modified or filename or anything. How can I compare the two folders to ID which files the 300 extra ones are?

The long-winded way I would do it is to open 2 Finder windows and make them the same depth. Put side-by-side.

Next, right-click on the column headings and make visible any extra columns you need, eg. Size.

Then I would click on the Name column heading in each window so that they are both sorted identically, then scroll each window downwards and maybe right-click any of the 300 files and Tag them with a colour?

Without looking it up, there's bound to be some utility that can do this task with greater ease.

:-) I think this will do it for you: http://visualdiffer.com a mere $4.99 on the App Store.

handy. is there a way to batch select all the files identified in the generated .txt file using terminal or finder, do you think?

I never find Terminal logical to use. I don't know enough about what to type to get folder file paths to show there - any guidelines?

On Windows there is software called WinMerge that enables you to see the difference between two folders and merge them as you want.

A search suggests Apple's FileMerge is somewhat equivalent to WinMerge but as I have no Mac I can't verify it.

Sorry if this isn't helpful!

The easiest way is to just drag the folder from the finder into the terminal window - the text path of that item will be translated to text.

So you'd type "diff -rq ", then drag the first folder to the terminal window, and then the second, and hit return.

There are of course many ways to type folder paths and many handy shortcuts like tab expansion in the terminal, but it's easiest to just drag them in to begin with (and watch the paths of items you drag in to learn how they are represented in unix-land).

If you wanted to do something with the results (say, delete them), yes, there are ways in terminal to do things like this, but you risk getting a bit complicated for terminal-phobes. It really depends on what you want to do, and if you're more comfortable in the finder, then a nice GUI utility is often the way to go.

The terminal thing was just to show there are often easy ways to do these kinds of things under your fingers, without having to go and buy/install an app etc...

Someone sent me the following:

rsync -avh --compare-dest=/Users/me/Dropbox/FOLDER1/ --size-only /Volumes/AUDIO/FOLDER2/ ~/Desktop/NEW

Which works perfectly on a test folder if I copy some out of the bigger folder into a smaller folder on my desktop and run it on that. It filters out anything from FOLDER2 that isn't in FOLDER1 and copies it into NEW

But if I run it on a folder in the dropbox it doesn't work, it just copies over the entirety of FOLDER2

I think that it might be because the versions in the dropbox folder have been given the same names as the ones on the AUDIO disk, and are the same files, but they have been named by a different means, so probably have different modified-by metadata (hence the attempt to sort by size only).

But adding size only doesn't seem to make it work....

Any ideas for a further edit would be very welcome as it's almost there!

Thanks :)

This is probably the best software out there for this...

https://www.deltawalker.com/

It's a bit pricy, but worth every dollar!

You can use it to easily compare folders in a visual way.

It can also be used in a similar way to compare the content of files visually.

They also have a free trial version.

And while there is competing software out there, Deltopia's user-interface in their software is second-to-none!!

Sincerely,
