Old USB ZIP drive ok with macOS/High Sierra?

Postby jellyjim » Tue Aug 14, 2018 2:58 pm

Hi

I'll spare you the details of why I want to do something as horrifying as use an old USB Iomega ZIP drive but, I'm assuming one will work with macOS/High Sierra without a fuss? It's just a USB device after all.

As I struggled to contain my horror I found this with the help of that nice Mr Google.

I found my answer yesterday with the drive itself. It works fine

So, what family skeletons are rattling around on your old zip disks? ;)

Lol

I’m banging my head against a wall named “effortless transfer of files between modern Mac and ancient Akai MPC/S-series samplers” :)

I’d actually forgotten that the MPC2000 for example ... DOESN’T HAVE FOLDERS!!!!

Oh the humanity!

I use RS-16x for this. Seamless. Yo can also create programs and batch convert WAV to SND.

"effortless" and "Akai" in the same sentence?

Yes. As in "he picked up the Akai and with an effortless toss, smashed it against the wall" :D

I nearly took in a stray Akai S5000 the other day (it was going through my bins looking for food) but even that won't take flipping IDE drives! "SCSI?! Damn right you are!" I said. "Now on your way."

In happier news the USB ZIP drive I procurred was only £20 (boxed with two disks too). There are jokers on eBay asking three times that, or more even.

I could happily donate some scsi cables to the cause! Well I think they are scsi, the dust is so thick on them I can't tell.

Do you need any more zip discs, Jim?
Just found a still-sealed box of 4x250meg discs and thought of this thread. I still have a PC with a zip drive but don't need any more discs - free to a good home if you can use them

The most painful thing I threw out was the MO drive and boxes of disks. Quite an investment of dough in that collection. I might even have the name wrong it was so long ago - was it magneto optical drive or just optical drive? But if the marketing dept had it correct those disks should still have the files safe and sound on them.
I hope the aliens have a disk reader that works and a Roland s-760 to load the samples into. 8-)
