USB to HDMI or VGA (or magically add another Thunderbolt port)

Postby jellyjim » Sat Jul 20, 2019 1:27 pm

There's always something!

It goes like this:

    * MacBook Air has just the one Thunderbolt port
    * Was happily connected to external monitor via that port
    * Buys UA Apollo Twin, yay all is good in the world
    * Oh, only one Thunderbolt port
    * Slaps forehead and groans

That leaves only a USB port to somehow connect to either HDMI or VGA (or magically add another Thunderbolt port but I don't think that's possible and if there are 'hubs' I suspect the Apollo isn't very good at sharing)

I've seen various slightly tawdry looking solutions on Amazon but I wonder if anyone can confirm a working gizmo?

USB to anything video doesn't add up to me so I suspect there are drivers involved.

It won't work, I'm afraid. TB is daisy-chain only. I consider kit that only has one TB port is definitely wicked and the Apollo Twin falls into that category. This may bugger your plans somewhat. The only idea I can come up with if you want to stick with UAD is to look for a second hand Apollo silverface with a Thunderbolt card fitted. These usually come in a chunk under a thousand and have two TB ports as well as the extra inputs and whatnot.

Thanks CC

What of USB to HDMI/VGA?

I see some evidence it can work but I'm suspicious

I've used it in situations where high performance isn't needed but it isn't a great solution.

Looking around you might be able to get an Apple Thunderbolt monitor for £3 - 400 or so secondhand, have a look on ebay. You can then daisy-chain Macbook -> monitor -> Apollo and that will work fine. Otherwise it may be time to drink the poisoned chalice and look at the Apple refurb store.

I have it: a thunderbolt docking station with an HDMI port and a second Tbolt port for daisy chaining the Apollo. How about that, then?

One of the Amazon reviews says: "it works great, i use it for connecting an apollo twin uad interface and a second monitor to my macbook pro late 2011" (lack of capitals in the original).

(Sadly, it's cheap compared to other docks :( )
