Mac Mini Latency with UA Apollo

Hello all. So, in the recent studio upgrade, we went for a high-spec Mac Mini, and an Apollo X8 (with ASP 800 on ADAT in) also an Avid S3.

Occasionally everything works fine. More often there is nasty latency - obvs not a problem with audio because of the console, but soft synths etc are impossible.

Changing to the S3 ASIO driver then back to the UA has sometimes fixed things.

Buffer size is normal.

Same with Pro Tools, Cubase 10.5 whatever. You can see MIDI is arriving on time, but then being delayed. The audio latency without using Console is also awful, we think more that stated but not sure. Changing the buffer size from 256 to whatever makes little difference.

Been advised that UA drivers hate all others, and we should delete all the ASIO drivers and then reinstall the UA.

The problem is we are both PC people and have no idea where to find the drivers on the Mac. As far as I can understand it, once found it is just a question of sticking them in the bin, and emptying the bin. But where are they and what are they called? Or is there some other explanation for all this?

I didn't set up or install any of this stuff, but I can ask Other Sam anything relevant.

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure that Macs don’t use Asio, they use Core Audio to drive interfaces and AU plugins.
Do you have a lot of virtual instruments with high polyphony/reserved notes running? Are any of the cores showing sudden ‘maximum activity’ spikes?

Hi.

No plugins and one piano active. Empty project.

You are right MOF, Macs do no? Since you say it's a recent upgrade I'll assume Catalina? Catalina has had issues with some software (or vice versa) but if you have the same problem with Cubase and Pro Tools.....

Whatever is happening you won't find ASIO (or any other device specific) drivers on the Mac so that can't be the cause.

I assume when you switch the S3 to ASIO it is a setting on the S3 itself? I would guess this is forcing the S3 to reconnect to the Mac.

Beyond that I can't help as I'm still on El Capitan and a Behringer X32, but that rig runs without significant latency and no problems up to a dozen plus tracks.

Yes it's Catalina. Same in Logic too.

The drivers in the menu in Cubase are labelled as ASIO which is rather confusing, I did a quick Google and they're indeed Windows / Steinberg specific.

The really weird thing is that we have had it all working a few times with no noticeable latency.

Things work differently on a Mac. When you installed the Apollo software it should have created a folder in Applications called Universal Audio. In there along with the Console and Meter apps and lots of documentation you will find an app called Uninstall Universal Audio Software. If you want to get rid of the drivers prior to reinstalling them that's how you do it.
