2011 iMac to 2020 iMac differences?

Postby james090 » Tue Sep 01, 2020 1:13 pm

I am contemplating a move from my current 2011 i5 iMac to a newer 2020 i9 iMac and am just checking the differences

So I am using High Sierra and use a combination of 32bit and 64bit plug ins all fine with Ableton live 10 and I also use the digital output on the headphones to my audient iD22 interface to record myself instead of using blackhole app (which I still see some teething problems) or soundflower.

So with the newer iMacs :

1. Do 32bit plugs not work at all even with 32lives (which I currently use with my iMac 2011) so will all my 32bit plugs vanish even old ones without the option to upgrade?

2. The headphone Optical out no longer works and was removed from newer macs so I’d have to use soundflower or similar.

What else should I look onto that may have changed?

I’m trying to think of everything before I change up to a newer model with connections drives and sockets (usb A still on the newer iMacs which makes it easier)

But is there anything I should be wary of or even stick with the 2011 iMac for a while longer?

Thanks for any help or input

It's less the hardware, and more the system - if it comes with Catalina, your old software will likely not work, even under 32 Lives, as there are no 32-bit frameworks for the code to run.

If you can put Mojave on it, you might be better off if you want to stick with some old software.

As for the headphone output - you should really be using an audio interface anyway, the inbuilt audio on Macs hasn't been great for a while - usable at a pinch, but no substitute for a proper audio interface.

I should point out that I do use an Audient interface as mentioned in my post that power my studio monitors.

The reason I use the digital headphone out is for a physical cable to record from the iMac back into itself via in to the Audient interface and it’s worked great at 24bit optical digital audio from say Ableton into Reaper directly on the same Mac.

Works a treat without loads of tweaking software with soundflower or BlackHole as this is a physical cable from out to in.

I have several of these (or similar). Love them.

*edit*
Thunderbolt 3 docks that really, really open macs up and make them usable. OWC makes super solid docks. Some of mine are 8+ years old and never had an issue.

Take my advice, I'm not using it.

I use Audio Hijack for that kind of thing. No repatching necessary, super simple, you can record or process with plugins whatever audio streams you want, no latency going through your audio driver's buffers etc...

Aye, it's smart software. I've even got it recording Jamulus sessions without significant impact on latency.

So I think with the audio sorted above with audio hijack or blackhole - is there anything else I should look for?

I think the 32bit plugs being lost is a biggie so maybe see if what I use or don’t use and keep my 64bit plugs

I heard that it wasn’t that easy to roll back on the newer iMacs ? And I suppose moving forward it would be better to move with the times and move forward with the new iMac and new MacOS
