Recommendations or otherwise for "Mac Cleaner" type program?

Postby Sam Spoons » Wed Sep 16, 2020 5:08 pm

Wot it sez. I want to remove duplicates and redundant files of a couple of Macs. I have 'Duplicate File Finder' for the former but it doesn't do cleaning up of redundant files. I've heard that Mac Cleaner can take over your system and be very hard to get rid of (heard it described as a virus by some).

I have CleanMyMac too. It doesn't do duplicate removal but it's great at clearing out rubbish. I ran it yesterday and it found 62 gb of crap to throw away. Empties your caches etc. I'd recommend it. You can get a simple free version at the App store but I bought mine as you get a lot more functionality.

CleanMyMac is good but just be careful as you can easily get it to delete stuff that you didn't want to delete, or that interferes with regular functionality of your Mac.

For instance, one guy complained that every time he ran Logic it was revalidating all his plugins, which took forever.

Turns out, it was because he'd set CleanMyMac to delete cache files regularly, which trashed the AU cache that tells apps which plugins are installed and validated, forcing a re-evaluation of all plugins every time.

That sounds really useful, Duplicate File Finder is ok at best but a bit inflexible (unless I'm missing some options).

Can you turn off CleanMyMac and only turn it on every few months? (Except if you want that clean cache often feature mentioned earlier)
I know I have years of redundant buildup but have been paranoid about erasing anything that will affect my music progs. But I also have more than enough disk space on my boot drive So still sit here pondering the best option.

You can use/run it however you like.

My point is, don't blindly turn everything on and set it to delete everything - understand what you are choosing to "clean" and why when you run it, otherwise it's going to delete stuff that you might not agree with - "eg delete large files".

That's all I'm saying...

Yes, and you can also go through what it has identified as “worth to delete” before the execution
