Boot failure: micro-stripe vertical stripes

After the opening chord, my screen went off for a few seconds, then presented as vertical stripes, the full colour spectrum, each stripe about a pixel wide.

I have cross-checked both the cable and the monitor via another machine, and it is neither, so I am guessing graphics card failure ?

Or is there anything else I can try ?

I don't know what your computer is, but yes, that sounds like a classic video hardware failure to me, either intermittent or terminal...

I had almost exactly that happen on an iMac. It was an oldish machine and the video card was no longer available so that was that. :(

I was able to get all my data off because I plugged a second screen into the displayport socket and that worked fine. So if you've got an option to run two screens you might try and see if you can get a second screen to work.

I am using a Mac Pro 5,1 Tower under OS 13.6.4

I purchased a pre-enjoyed Nvidia GTX 680. I get the opening chord OK, but then just a 'no signal message'. I am wondering do I need a driver, and how would I install it without a working screen?

OK. I have just found the appropriate driver for the card, and downloaded it, but on to my PC - So how do I get it onto the Mac ? All I can think of thus far is get another used card, the same as the original, which are cheap, then install it, just to use it to download the Invidia driver, then put the Nvidia back in.

As it happens, I was on the brink of replacing the original card so I can upgrade to OS 14, Mojave, but it died before I got round to it, so I bought the Nvidia.

Not had to deal with this but surely basic graphics are built in to the BIOS. Try booting into recovery mode for starters (⌘+R) https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201255.

It didn't work.

I am not a Mac expert at all so may be very wrong here....

I would have assumed that MacOS would come with all the drivers for any hardware likely to be seen in a Mac.

Ditto. That was my expectation too.

I suppose it could be that the pre-enjoyed card is indeed faulty, or could it be a fault on the board somewhere ?

And how can I find out, unless I buy another card ?

I now see from mac threads that there seems to be (or was) some sort of spat between Apple and Nvidia...

That was my thought also...

If you're not in a hurry I may have a basic, functional, GPU card that you can have, I'll have a look over the weekend.

Yes please! That would be a great help, thanks! Very kind of you!

I notice some of the nvidia fora and threads occasionally refer to the 'mac edition' of the card I am trying to install ?

Does anyone know are they actually physically different cards (surely not?) or is the difference just in the drivers ?

When it arrived, it had a removable screw-fixed curved metal plate on the back, some sort of adaptor, perhaps for PC? That was not attached in any of the 'how to install' videos on YouTube, and it had to be removed to install in the mac.

So could that be one of the reasons it is not working ?

Although it was clearly advertised and described as mac compatible.

From memory, the original card used one 6 way power cable from the video card to a board in the computer.
I think your new card uses 2 of the 6 way power cables.

Another thing, have you tried a different output on the GTX video card- HDMI or DVI?
