hey there,
I am producing music at my home studio, but it is time for a new machine..
I am considering buying this:
Intel Pentium DC E5800 3.2GHz
4GB RAM
1TB HDD
DVD Writer
No Operating System
more specs here: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/251310
I intend to run Cubase 6 , and a presonus firepod soundcard.
Could anyone tell me their thoughts on this pc?
and would you recommend upgrading to windows 7 (I am currently using xp)
thanks in advance!

Actually looks quite good... Though the firepod is firewire isn't it? there's no firewire port on that computer so you'd need to add one with a card!

Cubase 6 is only supported on Windows 7. Whilst many people (myself included) are currently running it on XP, the support you get from Steinberg will be limited & there's no guarantee that future updates/upgrades will run on it.

If I can get XP up and running on that, it looks like it's just what I need (once I've added an extra graphics card and a couple of Firewire cards...)
Thanks for posting it!

Indeed, isn't it quite an old processor?. Wouldn't you be better with a newer processor (i3, i5) or, if money's an issue, a dual/quad core AMD.

Indeed - if you're on a limited budget then an Intel Core i3/i5 might be a better choice.

Scott ADK's charts can help show the quantifiable difference in cpus here: http://www.adkproaudio.com/benchmarks.cfm
Worth pricing up both options with those bench's in mind but last time I did it the Intel came out as the better bang per buck at that level. It does come down to what you require from the machine through and if you don't require the bang you can spend less bucks.

And of course there are mine too, which are vaguely appropriate since these are the SOS Forums :bouncy:
In fact here's the most recent, which was created when I last reviewed a Scan 3XS PC

Bit off topic to the original post, but has anyone else noticed the text on some of the longer replies are cut off on the right hand side?

Whats with all these pastel colours, there are people who find them not so easy to distinguish.
Bold colours, stripes., dots, slashes.

Indeed Martin. For some reason I haven't got a direct link to your chart saved through.
