Cubase: monitoring MIDI plus live audio

Postby Airlane » Tue Dec 05, 2017 4:45 pm

Cubase AI 9.5, Windows 10. I have a Yamaha MX49 synth, UR22 interface, a small audio mixer and an electric guitar played via a multi-FX unit. The MX49 has its own USB interface into the computer, as well as the UR22's own ASIO driver.

How do I monitor the MX49 MIDI tracks from Cubase while I record the guitar? I'm confused as to the audio and MIDI routing via cables and in Cubase.

You can only have one ASIO audio driver running in Cubase. You will have to make audio connections outside of Cubase to handle your monitoring, I'm afraid.

How do other people with small home studios arrange their monitoring setups?

They would connect synths with audio cables, rather than USB. You can either connect the synth to your audio interface and monitor from there, or to a hardware mixer.

A simple setup would be to connect the outputs from your audio interface and from the MX49 to your mixer. When you record guitar (which you hopefully plug directly into the audio interface) you would set the audio interface to send the incoming guitar to the mixer too, along with any sounds coming from your DAW, using the Input/DAW mix knob on the front of the UR22.

Your headphones and/or speakers would then be connected to the mixer. This configuration should work OK and prevent you from creating any nasty feedback loops.
