connect Motu micro express with PC parallel port/usb

Postby Mood of Midas » Fri Dec 22, 2017 2:17 am

Hello everyone, this is my first post here in this forum! :)
I just bought a Motu micro express midi interface pretty cheap and want to connect it to Ableton. I am running Windows 10. My question: the interface has a Parallel port only. Will any Parallel/USB cable adapter work for this purpose? Or are only certain cables able to transmit Midi to a DAW and back from the computer to the instruments? I am thinking of something like this:
https://www.amazon.de/CSL-Parallel-Adap ... rallel+usb
Thank you for your help!

The only version of the MOTU Micro Express that I can see is USB. I suspect that what you have is a very old interface?

It may work, but I would seriously doubt it. Personally I would use the money to buy a USB-equipped interface and do the job properly.

Yes it is a old interface. Like i said, i got it because it was pretty cheap. So if it works out it would be great.

Wow. I suspect you’re one of the few people in the world that has one of these, let alone thinking about hooking it up to modern gear. You probably won’t find anyone who has tried this, so you might as well try. But I doubt it will be class compliant, so it likely won’t work. Let us know how it goes...

If you spend any more more I suspect you will be throwing good money after bad. I'm afraid that some 'bargains' are not all they seem to be...

Unless you were on Vista or XP, I doubt there are any drivers for the unit either. Certainly not WIN10. With the parallel interface, It sounds more like the MOTU MIDI flyer http://www.motu.com/products/midi/flyer than a MOTU micro express (which is just USB).

IIRC there *was* a version (ancient) of the Micro Express that was parallel. But, as you say, there's little chance of any driver that will work now.

Yes, I have one too. It sits upon my Emu E5000 Ultra Sampler which serves as a coffee cup perch.

Very disappointed that such a useful piece of kit has no modern interface option

If you know the protocol and a bit programming skill, maybe use an Arduno to convert it to USB?
