2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4056891)

Just installed this with no apparent ill effects. Asus Z170-A with i7 6700K @ 4.0GHz. InSpectre now reports I'm protected from Meltdown.

Great! My Skylake laptop seems to be fine, though I haven't tried production on it yet. Spectre is looming, however... glad I didn't update the bios, since Intel's patch went down in flames.

My other Windows machines:

The general use and experimentation Sandybridge's butt was kicked, so I disabled the patch, got rid of all sensitive passwords, accounts, etc. and disabled java script in the browser. The bios will never be updated, however, so it's on fast track for deprecation. Still good for gaming and video editing, but I'll be upgrading to the next generation of Ryzen, more than likely; we'll see what kind of protection next gen chips offer. The GTX970 video card turns out to be a keeper since you can't buy video cards for sane prices anymore. Plays games and renders video!

My main production machine is Haswell, so I've disabled all updates until I get some projects done. Its microcode will also never be updated, so what I'll probably do is update all my software, find a happy work configuration, take a disk image and lock it down and hunker down, keep it off the net until this shakes out. It works great as is, and I have enough tools to keep me happy for a long time.

It's a good time to hold your cards and explore all your tools and not be distracted by new and shiny fishing lures. If you're like me, you've never explored fully what you already have!

Since this update the camera on my Surface 4 has gone AWOL which is a common issue apparently. I'm not missing it but it does seem to indicate a certain degree of carelessness on M$'s part.

Next update February 13, 2018—KB4074588 (OS Build 16299.248) fried my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Mk2 driver.

Fortunately I only had to record two short voiceovers, I would have been awfully miffed had I been doing my regular load.

Installed driver update Windows: Focusrite USB ASIO 4.36.5 and all sweetness and light again.

Next time I record I'll do a test before committing to the whole load :)
