Software for disk cloning to a smaller drive?

Postby Agharta » Wed Jul 25, 2018 11:23 am

I want to replace my 1TB SSD boot drive with a 256GB SSD as I only want to keep the O/S partitions on a PCIe drive; they consume around 110GB so a 256GB drive is fine.
The large data partition on the 1TB drive will be moved to a different drive.

Is there any free or inexpensive cloning software that can copy just the O/S partitions to a new drive and make it bootable?

Do you already have the 256G drive A'?

I ask because when I bought a Samsung SSD it came with a free copy of Macrium Reflect and even this PC numpty managed to run it.

I have no idea if Reflect allows you to "pick off" a specific partition but if you don't have the drive yet, ask a few searching questions of the makers?

It's an OEM Toshiba drive so didn't come with any software but I will double check to see if there is a freebie although that tends to be for retail drives.

It was already installed from a previous project which didn't go well but it worked fine for this.

It is typical isn't it, I should have kept my mouth shut!

I have carried a torch for Macrium Reflect for years now, it has been flawless.

So the other day I came across some click candy, a free portable util that did registry defragging, cleaning and other system utilities, so I gave it a run out, then thought - oops, I never did a system image.

So when I tried to run Macrium, it's broke!!! It says backup aborted, drive cannot be found. And I noticed the icon for a macrium image is not the usual one with the little 'm' but one of those Windows icnons where it cannot make the association from the icon to the app.

So I thought OK, at least I have an image to fall back on, and guess what, Macrium wouldn't restore the image. Why didn't I just leave things alone :-(
