I have not had any Windows update on my PC since July 2013!!!
I want to try some Waves plug ins but the Waves Central software says a file is missing.
I think this is because my Windows is out of date.
I use Cockos Reaper with UAD plug ins.
Would it be ok just to change the Windows setting to allow automatic updates?
I suppose this will take ages?
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Never had any issues thus far...

Re: Windows Update
I have run the updates since Windows 7 was installed. No issues and I would recommend that you keep it up to date especially from security point of view. I run Waves with Cubase and works fine on my system

Re: Windows Update
You're running a Window machine on the Internet and haven't installed any security updates for five years?!
Blimey, that's... brave...

Re: Windows Update
Pretty certain it will be fine but...
1) it will probably take a long time and require several restarts throughout the weekend.
2) You may need to reactivate some plug-ins afterwards as the update process might trick the software into thinking you're on a new machine.

Ignore the post count, I have no idea what I'm doing...
Re: Windows Update
Thanks for that.
The file that was missing is:
api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll
Can I just download this or something?
I got the same error message with some Izotope software.

Re: Windows Update
I found in recent years that Windows 7 can take ages to update to the point where it has to be left on overnight.
Also there is an official MS tool for debugging Update problems so you might want to run that prior to leaving it on overnight.
My experience relates to 2016/17 and earlier so not sure if things have improved.
There are also some large updates that you can manually download which saves time but as your machine hasn't been updated for years I'd hesitate in suggesting you look into that.

You can. it's a C++ redistributable, so you should be able to find and download it online.

Oh! &%$$*!! DLL files! Used to get this mind destroying game with XP. I would find a program would not run because of a missing DLL file but could never find any way to get hold of them.
I worked at that time with some very clever graduate IT people but when it came to audio/music computing they did not have a Scooby!

Re: Windows Update
Two links pulled from Google, seems to back up other thoughts here.
https://github.com/cmderdev/cmder/issues/501
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/332 ... ffice-file
My only concern with just downloading the one file is if it is then going to request something else once you've installed it as a dependency. Can but try in this instance, probably worth setting a restore point for safety.

A quick search brought up the advice from Adobe to go to
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226
which should install the official Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows from Microsoft.

Well, it costs nothing to try.
Save the old dll if it exists (just rename it with some ".OLD" extension), then copy the new one anywhere in path (if you don't know, just open "cmd" and write "path" and the system will tell you the places where it goes looking for the dlls). Then restart windows and try to run your plugin.
It's a C++ redist so it's not gonna affect the operating system. Worst case, it'll tell you that something else is missing.

Dave.
YOu can get a BSc in Computer Science without being that clever, it all depends on what course they did and what uni they went to, some unis dish degrees out like bus tickets, even the work's cat has a degree. Some I.T degrees are nothing but glorified MS Office courses.
But even a well informed IT specialist might not have the specific knowledge as regards the special demands of music production.
A brain surgeon will be a doctor, and a heart surgeon will be a doctor too, but that doesn't mean they both have the especial knowledge to do each others' work
