Hi,

Can anyone recommend a really quiet CD/DVD drive for my PC?

If you want quiet then you'll have to set it to run at no faster than 4X speed. I'm not sure which drives allow you that level of control these days but the old Plextor drives like the Premium certainly used to give you control over speeds.

You could use a USB 3.0 external drive and keep it 3mtrs away?

...yeah...my thought was to use an SSD. I can't remember the last time I used a CD/DVD.

I meant a USB 3.0 external DVD drive!! Mind you, sticks are now so cheap you could just give everyone an 8G or so one. 'Tis that season of the year!

BTW (bit OT) I found out yesterday that playback of dual layer DVDs is much more dirt sensitive than the Bog S ones.

Sorry I doubt many people will be able to give you a recommendation, I would imagine all modern dvd drives operate at around the same noise level. For what it's worth, most people who still use/need a dvd drive probably go the external route. That way you can disconnect it/turn it off when you don't need it, or put it in a wood cabinet or something to dampen the noise...

Doh! Just thought to ask. What do you want to run the DVDs for?

If just data, samples say why not just copy the data to the desktop and run it from there silently?

I have in fact always follwed this procedure when say installing drivers from CD (remember when we did that? Ah well! Happy daze) I would copy that slow old drive's data to DT and then run it. Bonus that I now had a safety copy which I could store in the HDD or cut and paste to say my NAS drive.
