How do I know if I have a USB 3.0 on Laptop?

Postby james090 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 10:00 am

Probably a simple question guys, but my Windows 10 laptop only has 3 USB sockets, but I'd like to know if i can tell if ALL or ONE of them is USB 3.0?

Is there a simple way to do this?

If there are for example, 2 x USB 2.0 I can use these for wired Mouse/keyboard (which i prefer) but if the other is USB 3.0, I am thinking of a (AC Powered) USB 3.0 hub to give me more ports?

I believe you need USB 3.0 to power a USB 3.0 hub or else the usb power will be throttled down to USB2?

Thanks for any help, and if possible, any recommendations on good USB3.0 hubs? (AC powered is fine, as I know its getting juice!) probably looking at around 7 x USB hub?

Thank you!

USB 3.0 sockets (and plugs) normally have a blue insert inside them.

Thanks Hugh, that something to bare in mind when buying a Hub, but with regards my laptop, all the USB sockets are black?

Is there a more technical way of finding out?

If you look at the device manager on your laptop it should tell you if you have any USB 3 hardware:

Alternatively you can hunt down the manual for your laptop on the website for the manufacturer, which should tell you if you have USB 3 support and if so which sockets support it. Most vendors have a fairly good set of docs available!

USB 3 hubs are backwards compatible with USB 2 hardware, so you can use a USB 3 hub but you won't get USB 3 speeds unless you have USB 3 hardware in the laptop.

If the above shows you have both USB 2 and 3 ports, then you'll have to read the manual to see if that tells you. There should be an online one if you've lost the manual on the disc that should have come with the laptop.

On my PC the blue/black colour scheme isn’t followed, my front facing usb 2 have a blue colour insert as well as the rear ones :headbang:
Another clue to usb3 is the ss logo (superspeed)

So i take it there are no USB 3.0 ports on my laptop looking at the Device Manager?

USB2.0 is still ok though?

Yeah, no USB 3 shown there by the look of it. What is the make, model and year of your laptop?

The Intel 3400 chipset listed is USB 2 . So, definitely all USB2, no USB3.

Hi james090,

Don't be too despondent though, as USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 480Mbps bandwidth is perfectly capable for the vast majority of multi-track audio purposes.

Yes, having USB 3.0 speeds is great for external backup drives and such like, for speedier loads/saves, but not having any USB 3.0 ports won't prevent you doing most tasks (except possibly some real-time video work) - they will just take a bit longer to complete.

Thanks Martin, my quandry (which you may think is a no-brainer) is deciding to keep 1 of 2 laptops (windows 10) to go alongside my iMac so that i have both platforms linked via Ethernet crossover cable.

I may start a new post on this just for opinions, but basically I have a :

(1) Dell E5500 2.53Ghz Core2Duo 4GB, 120GB 32-bit W10 laptop (with USB3.0 and faster 5GHZ modem internet)

(2) Acer Aspire Intel i3 2.53Ghz 8Gb 500Gb 64-bit W10 Laptop (with only USB2 and 2.4Ghz slower internet)

I don't use either of these for full DAW sequencing, only Sound Forge editing really alongside the Mac, but do use for audio recording, sampling, and general internet use.

It maybe a no-brainer, but the Dell seems to be a bit 'zippier' and has the faster internet, and a USB 3.0 dock that it sits on.... However the Acer is a faster machine, i3, more RAM overall, but less USB's but I suppose I can get a USB hub and a small USB dongle for 5GHZ connections?

What would you do? (i may re-post this in the week as a separate post).

Use your device manager on the Acer to find out if its Wi-Fi is 802.11g (54Mbps) or 802.11n (300Mbps).

If the latter, then a dongle on a USB2 port won't really make much real difference in speed as you'll still be limited by the 480Mbps maximum theoretical speed of the port (which will be lower in practice).

If the former, then yes, you should see a very worthwhile performance increase - but you are taking up a complete USB port as you won't want to run it on a hub and share the associated USB port's bandwidth.

OK thanks, the Acer is 802.11n ?

Well, you may see maybe a slight increase with a wifi dongle, say 1/3 faster. Probably not enough to make much difference in normal use but for very big files it could take minutes off uploads.

I would uploaded an image myself but not allowed; so when I plug a USB 3 device into a USB 2 hub, I get a message saying this device will run faster plugged into a USB 3 hub

Black actually indicates USB2 - USB1 connectors are white if they conform to the colour code. However not all manufacturers conform - my Dell connectors are all black but two of them are USB3 while 3 of them are USB2.

Dunno about that, my HP is exactly the same. You can tell the USB3 ones by the SS logo.
