I am upgrading my Apollo Firewire to an Apollo x8, and need to add a thunderbolt 3 port to my PC. I currently have an Asus P8Z77-VLX motherboard installed, which doesn't have a thunderbolt header, to allow the connection of a thunderbolt 3 PCIE card. Is there a way around this, or would I need to install a different motherboard, and if so does anybody have any recommendations? The PCIE card I have been looking at is the ASUS Thunderbolt Ex3. Here is the complete spec of my PC:

CPU: 2092 - Intel Core i5 3470
CPU Cooler: 3015 - Xigmatek Loki SDS963
Operating System: Windows 10
Motherboard: 4139 - Asus P8Z77-V LX
Memory: X2C101 - 8GB DDR3 1600mhz (2x4GB)
Hard Drives: 6034 - Corsair 120GB Force3 SSD S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s
Secondary Hard Drive: 6042 - 1.5TB S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s
Optical Drive: H101 - 22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA
Graphics card: Q201 - Onboard Video
Sound Card: Q302 - Onboard 7.1 Audio
Accessories: J401 - Firewire PCI card
Case: K305 - Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl
PSU: 18033 - 500W Xigmatek

Thunderbolt 2 shipped about a year after that mainboard did and PC's didn't get TB 1 support, so I suspect you might be bang out of luck on finding anything with TB support and your current CPU.

If so, I suspect it's a new board, new RAM, new CPU and to round it off if that PSU's more than 5 years I'd be swapping that out as well.

Thanks Peter, I updated my computer to a NUC, and it has worked out really well (there would have been too mich to do on the old PC!)
