Can anyone recommend the best DAW to use with a pc keyboard as a controller

Hi, so i decided i wanted to use a laptop to create music with my foot while i played my guitar. I plan to use a usb keyboard as a foot controller, however i need the active keys spaced out so i don't press the wrong one. So i've tried ableton and kontact player and neither have complete pc keyboard remapping options. Am i missing something here? Is there a workaround for this? I'm new to pc music so i don't know all the secrets. Or is there a good DAW around that has full pc keyboard remapping? I tried a google search but it seems google is absolute rubbish nowadays as a search engine. Good for showing ads though. Any advice much appreciated.

Just a dim recollection of something seen some time ago, a MIDI foot pedal board?

I am sure Behringer made one. If you don't have one already you will need an Audio Interface but make sure it is one with MIDI ports. Cubase used to be the bee's bent bits for MIDI but I think most DAWs are pretty good with it these days? Try Reaper.

Any help?

Dave.

When you say 'usb keyboard', do you mean piano-style keyboard or typewriter-style keyboard?

Just to clarify, i'm talking about a computer typing keyboard. I want a cheap, lightweight solution i can carry around. I've tried kontakt player and ableton and i was surprised that on neither of them could you fully remap the keys on a computer keyboard. So i wondered if anyone new a daw setup where you could do this

Reaper. You can map any key to any action or series of action (ie, build a macro). Really easy and completely comprehensive.

Regarding spacing of keys... some ideas

Or you can get really crazy and pull out the board and make a foot controller with diy switches an then spend a weekend mapping the switches to the correct terminals on the board. Then cover it in leather (like i did  )

Cakewalk has had a "virtual controller" for ages - Views/Virtual Controller/Computer Keyboard.

With that any keyboard becomes a basic MIDI controller for any channel you want - you can select octaves, play white and black keys and change velocities with the cursor keys etc.

I've never really used it much and I discovered it by mistake, and I don't know if it's sophisticated enough for your uses, but it does work - check https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation? ... ws.51.html

(that's the old Sonar help but Cakewalk is identical, only free and with a lot of bugfixes).

Its ok, i don't want to see those, that's not really my cup of tea old chap!

Cakewalk has had a "virtual controller" for ages - Views/Virtual Controller/Computer Keyboard.

Thanks for the heads up, I looked at the cakewalk docs and it seems you cannot redefine the black and white piano keys, they are always fixed in the same place on the computer keyboard  It seems this is the same for a lot of daws, it was the same for ableton and kontact also.

If you're talking about playing tunes with your feet then how about something like this ... ?

https://freepiano.tiwb.com/en/

Never used it, don't know if its a safe download but looks like you can load vst instruments into it and then map and play with a querty.

There are probably others.

Ok so with freepiano you can set the computer keyboard up how you want, defining all keys etc, and then use it as a virtual midi device with any DAW?
