Can I use a SW Preamp for Dynamic Mic for ESI Juli@ Soundcard

Postby Baldo » Tue Mar 31, 2020 3:00 pm

I want to use a Sennheiser Dynamic Mic as the input for for ESI Juli@ soundcard but the SC only has non balanced inputs (RCA or 6.3mm Jack).

I have a decent analogue mixer with Pre amps in it (Allen & Heath MixWizard). Could I connect the mic to the mixer and then take a direct aux out from the mixer and feed that into the RCA input into the SC?

Alternatively, can I by pass the mixer and use a SW preamp plugin to boost the dynamic mic signal within the PC?

Many thanks
Baldo.

You need a hardware preamp to connect a mic to your soundcard. If you try to do this just by boosting the level in software you'll end up with a very noisy signal - and possibly a slightly different sound as the input on the soundcard will have a higher impedance than the mic is expecting.

So using the mixer as a preamp is going to be the best way to do this.

Since the Mix Wizard has direct outs for each channel, you could patch right into the interface without running through the rest of the mixer.

Thanks guys.

So the SW option is a no brainer. lets forget that then.

In terms of the HW option, my mixer does have a "Dir Out" for each channel. I assume that this can be used and patched into my SC input. I also assume that the EQ on that channel is available so my EQd signal is fed into the SC rather than just the raw unprocessed signal.

Here’s the block diagram:

Looks like it’s post eq pre fader with the jumpers at default.
