Great audio-editor with VST-support. Still in beta, but pretty good already.

n-Track Studio 5.0.3 Build 2205 - FREE

Audio & MIDI, 24bit & 16bit. Supports DXi & VST plugins.
95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP.

"n-Track Studio is a multitrack recorder for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
A complete recording studio in your PC: all you need is a card and some free space on your hard disk.
The program supports simultaneous recording from multiple 16 and 24 bit soundcards,
and real-time audio effects can be applied non-destructively to each track,
allowing the user to listen immediately to the result of a change in the parameters of an effect:
up to 25 combinations of effects per track are allowed.

Built-in effects include Reverb, AutoVol, Echo, Pitch Shift, Chorus and Track EQ.
The program can use third party DirectX and VST plug-ins
to process in real-time audio signals in a number of different ways.
Effect can also be used to process the recorded signal in real-time so that the computer can act as a multi-effects device.
The program uses 24 bit (32 bit floats) resolution for mixing and effects processing.
Various wave files formats are supported, mono & stereo tracks are can coexist in the same song
and wave editing operations can be performed from within the program.
MIDI tracks can be imported end exported to regular MIDI files,
and edited using the built in piano-roll based MIDI editing.
All the audio tracks are saved as standard wave files and mixed "on the fly" during playback.
Volume and pan evolution can be programmed by drawing on the timeline window.
When all the tracks have been recorded and all the settings are correct,
it's possible to mix-down all the tracks to a single wave file for recording it to a compact disk using a CD recorder
or for distributing it through the Internet (using the built-in mp3 encoder)."

Our purpose is unique to us, just as meaning of our life is unique to us. Thus should be obvious there is no universal purpose. There is no universal meaning of life.

Anyone ever found a decent freeware sample player? Preferably one for multisampled instruments rather than drums. I've been using one called DS-404 from Computer Music magazine but it's incredibly fiddly.

Tux Guitar http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/

Think Guitar Pro, but it's free. Use it to compose your songs, unless you like it scribbled on paper :P

It plays both Guitar Pro files and Power Tab files.

An excellent way of arranging your guitar based music.

Wavosaur: http://www.wavosaur.com/

Freeware Soundforge-style 2-track editor with VST effect and ASIO support.

If I didn't already have Soundforge 8, I'd be using this!

Wow, just downloaded reaper and I am blown away by both it's power and it's simplicity. I paid £1300 for Nuendo3 and now wish I hadn't. You MUST try this, and the licence is practically a give away for the non-commercial version.

Remember that Reaper isn't free though, so strictly speaking is shouldn't be included here ;)

I agree that it's extremely capable and remarkable value though.

I needed a partition editor for my new build pc and came across an excellent one called Gparted (live cd)

I used ISO Recorder to make a bootable ISO CD.

It's easy to use and more than does the job.

this is what you are all looking for i think. there is top shelf FREE software for just about any audio application you will ever require here.
some of it can be had from windows, but sod that when this is an operating system designed from the ground up for low latency audio where you don't have to tell it in 6 million different menus that this is your priority.. sorry if anyone thinks this is the wrong forum for this but just scope out the free software! much joy.

For really unique and original synths I would recommend:

Atlantis

and

Scanned Synth Mini

Cheers,

John.

Why oh why has nobody mentioned the wonderful Gersic.com It's easier to locate stuff than KVR or Free Vst. Go on take a look, it sees to be updated more frequently.

On the Compressor side of things any one seen the rather snazzy looking Antress Modern Plugins, some of which show more than a passing resemblence to some infamous big names.

On the orchestral side of things you must check out DSK Brass and DSK Stringz. How they are free is beyond me. The strings one is mind blowing for free.

(they can be found on Gersic.com)
