Intermittently disconnecting Focusrite 2i2 2nd

Postby antuk » Sat Aug 29, 2020 5:56 pm

Hello

I have a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 2nd gen usb powered audio interface. it worked great for a year or so and since around Feb it has been disconnecting for about half a second and then reconnecting, as if it somehow lost connection. Sometimes the light would 'flash' and if the disconnection period is a bit longer, the sound icon on the tastbar would show that the device is gone.

Steps taken so far:

Reinstall new drivers (Focusrite, Realtek, various chipset, usb...)

Focusrite gave me a new unit

Tried different USB ports

Checked USB power settings

Upgrading from win7 to 10

Using native win10 drivers instead of Focusrite driver

Uninstall bitdefender

Checked USB port voltage and did not reveal voltage spike/drops when disconnect happens

Do a partial reset of Windows 10 where the system is reinstalled with personal files intact, i need to reinstall the programs and drivers again etc.

Sometimes the solutions would work for a day without disconnections and then it comes back again after I let my guard down or a reboot lol

My mobo is 6 yr old Asus H87-EM. I have another dac that takes power from wall socket which works fine. All other mouse/keyboards are working fine as well.

I think it's probably some kind of weird hardware issue, because I once tried to plug the interface into a laptop and overnight there were no notifications from focurite driver indicating a disconnection as it would on my main pc...

Any guidance welcome, thanks

You've done a lot of testing and investigating, but you haven't mentioned trying a different USB cable...

I will definitely echo Mike here, I had similar issues last year which turned out to be a dodgy USB cable.

Ah yes

I actually have done that - no joy
Tried a random cable and when the replacement unit came, there was another cable which I'm using

The two focusrite cables yielded no observable difference

Hi
I had the same problem with my new Steinberg UR22C. Someone from Steinberg said that
it’s due to the device not being connected properly.
I changed the included lead to a better quality one (Anker USB 3.0) and no more USB dropouts.
I also followed this guide for optimising Windows 10 for audio. All helps.

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 1st gen it replaced worked fine, just that it wouldn’t start at Windows startup. Replug required hence the new interface.
Focusrite were helpful and concluded that a BIOS update would possibly sort it.
I didn’t go down that route but it may help with your motherboard.

Install and run LatencyMon to see if that brings up any issues or conflicts.

oh yes
i ran it quite a few times before
if/when it cuts off. the overview page remains green

on the dpc sounds, usually the ones with the highest counts are direct x display driver, some system kernals, internet and usb 1/2 driver

i dont remember making much software changes to the computer when the problem started, so i don't even know what to delete  besides i have upgraded to win 10 and did a reset...

Yes, bit frustrating. Give the lead plugs and usb sockets contacts a clean. That helped when I was figuring out the same problem with my UR22c.
Also a support ticket with Focusrite if not done already.

If using a laptop, use the power supply for it although my 2i2 always ran fine with or without one.
Turn off WiFi and AV too.

It went back and forth for months and the guy ran out of ideas bless him

Oh! Let me try and clean the contacts! Never thought of that...
Cant remember if I should use an eraser or isopropyl alcohol?
Thanks!

I think I just used damp kitchen roll but isopropyl switch cleaner would work well.
