Is there such a thing as a switched USB cable?

Postby blinddrew » Fri Nov 06, 2020 4:42 pm

I can find a few usb power cables with switches in, but not any that handle data as well.
Does anyone know of one?
Cheers

Is that for the recording-in-progress light? :)

ah, yes that seems to interrupt the data as well as the power side. Thank you.

Let me know if it works - I could do with one.

(I hate these USB devices that have no power switch. I don't want to have to disconnect and reconnect all the time just to turn a master keyboard on/off - annoying.)

...plenty of hubs with individual switches of course, which is what I use...

Sadly not, I've worked out that the BSODs on my computer are caused by my interface and i'm looking for an easier way of turning it on and off.

Do they give a complete circuit cut? Or just power?

I'm not sure...I've got this one at work but I'm not back until Tuesday. How would you test that? Don't all USB devices need power?

My interface has a separate power supply, so i need a switch that disconnects the unit completely.
Or i just go behind the desk and unplug it.

Rather disturbing that an interface causes BSODs...

I have a Kensington 7-port hub connected to my Mac.
USB devices can draw power in a number of ways:
- Devices can draw power from the USB host (the computer)
- Devices can draw power from the USB hub (my USB hub can be optionally powered by it's own adaptor - mine is)
- Devices devices can have their own power supply and draw no power from USB at all

I have devices that draw power from the hub (including my master keyboard), and also devices that draw power from their own power supplies (eg hard drives).

It would be nice to have a switch on at least some ports to do the same job as disconnecting the USB cable completely (which I assume is the point of these switches).

Indeed. Well, it's probably the drivers rather than the interface i guess, but I've done quite a bit of testing and it does appear to be the culprit.
