There are probably USB port control options in the BIOS eg to leave the USB on/off when the computer is OFF. Have you investigated those ?

I've been using one of these for a year or more and find it perfectly satisfactory. One of the devices hanging off it is the Arturia Keylab Mk II and it serves as the power switch for same. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B081NK6LH6/

I have a wee box that allows two USB devices to alternately use one computer IUSB port.
If I can find it you are welcome to it.

I don't think this is going to help, though I may well be misunderstanding - BIOS is out of my league computer-wise. I need the data side of the USB to be off throughout the boot-up cycle of the computer, not just when the machine is off.

@Eddy, something like that (or the smaller one linked earlier) would do the job if they cut the whole connection not just power. I might just have to shell out an entire £6.99 and stick a multi-meter across the connections.
But, well, £6.99 is practically a year's royalty income*... ;)

@Dave, ooh, hadn't thought of a 'switcher'. Will have a quick google.

Or I could just stop being lazy and bend down and plug and unplug it each time.

Possibly, need to check the reviews and see if definitely cuts data as well as power. It seems a surprising number don't.

Why not just cut the power to the interface until your machine has booted? It should be easy enough to wire a switch into the power cable. The standard procedure with my Focusrite interface is to switch it on only once the computer has finished booting - fortunately mine has a front panel power switch.

Mine doesn't have a power switch so i'd have to cut into the power supply cable and do it like that. Which wouldn't be tricky i guess.

You might need something like this

(That's just an example - I don't know what connector size the interface uses).

I cant help feeling theres a windows 10 services setting to cover peripheral start up boot time.

My Laser printer is very old, used to start up ok [XP/W7 & HD] but now I need to turn it on after booting the PC.

Is this because the combination of W10 + SSD gives a start up so fast that it outpaces the printers boot time scale ????

Is this the same interface that was causing audio distortion problems in Zoom conferences, or the other one (that worked well with Zoom)?

The same one. Though interestingly that doesn't seem to be happening any more.

James and Music Wolf have hit upon the solution between them.
Put all the peripherals on a separate power strip and switch them on when everything else has booted up.
Easy.
Now why didn't I think of that? :headbang:

I've ordered another USB hub to replace (or complement) my existing Kensington dalek.

I went for this one, which is a 7-port hub with port switches and a charging port:

We'll see how it goes...
