Video Playback Problems

Postby awjoe » Tue Jan 05, 2021 9:28 am

Hi - I'm having video playback problems on my desktop.

Online, neither browser (Firefox, Microsoft Edge) will play videos on my Win 10 desktop - no Youtube, no Prime, no news sites. (My internet connection's okay - I can play online videos okay on my tablet.) My two browsers are updated, and I've refreshed Firefox. No joy.

I can play onboard videos fine in some software, but not in other software. The graphics driver is updated. The only change since yesterday, when things were working, has been a Microsoft Security Intelligence Update today. Can an antivirus update mess with video playback in browsers?

This is a new problem for me - I've never had this one before. Any ideas?

But when it's smaller than the knob to turn it on, what's the point?

Have you tried running the inbuilt video playback troubleshooter on your PC?
Search for 'troubleshoot' click on 'Additional troubleshooters' and scroll down to ''Video Playback' (on the left of the screen under the heading 'Find and Fix Other Problems')

Okay, thanks - I did that, and the troubleshooter coughed up a suggestion to install an HEVC codec from the Microsoft store. In the Microsoft store, that HEVC codec is offered for free, but it's not a download - I have to register my device with Microsoft in order to do an online install.

Question: Is registering my device with Microsoft as innocuous as it looks, or is it inadvisable?

It's as innocuous as registering with any other provider really.

Piddle, that didn't work. Ran the Troubleshooter and it recommended installation of HEVC codec, which I did. Still have the problem.

Time to resort to my trusted computer techie, then?

Uh...hang on. Now it's working. Don't you just love it when you're wrong about being wrong? Okay, I'll check in tomorrow after me and the computer have both had a night's sleep.

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head.

Turned on the computer and played a Youtube video.

Thank you, pk.roberts, whoever you are.

He may not be the hero we deserve, but he's the one we need right now.

I think Christopher Nolan might object to that...
