weird midi sync problem...

Postby zout » Sat Feb 27, 2021 4:50 pm

hi there
i got myself a little bit of a mistery today....

i run cubase elements 10 on a 2 years old i7 win machine,
it s running a couple of soft synths as well (NI komplete )
i also have some hardware synths (a jp8000, a cs1x, a mc505, a td3 , and a tr8s)
they are hooked via midi through a usb midisport 4x4 (the td3 and the tr8s have usb connections to the pc as well)

today i noticed something very weird indeed...

i have maybe 10 tracks of softs synths running perfectly in sync ...

but,...
when i try to do a rythm/drum track on the tr8s or the mc505, the resulting audio is not aligned to cubase s metronome,...
total irregularity, some hits are before, some after,...
granted not by, say, a second, but still very annoyingly out of sync....

any ideas??

what am i missing??

i know the midisport 4x4 is a very old piece of equipment ,... but i was hoping for a better MIDI timing,,....

thanks all

happy week end :D :D

I wonder if this is your problem. You should really connect by either MIDI *or* USB, but not both. It may be that these devices are receiving two sets of clock signals.

you might be right, (of course,... ;) )
so i tried and removed the midi connections to the usb and midi equipped instruments...
to no avail,... :(

update...

via the midisport the timing of the tr8s ( when playing internal patterns AND when commanding it via a cubase s midi track) vis a vis cubase s metronome is all over the place

BUT, when i do the same thru the usb in of the tr8s
the pattern playing is still out of whack,
but when i command it thru a midi track the timing appear rock solid.

the way i was making the tr8s playing the patterns was through a midi clock sent via the midisport 4x4 OR via the usb tr8s (in the cubase sync setup menu)

so i tried playing with the differents sync settings in cubase
the internal timecode seems to be ... weird
the midi timecode and the vst system link seem to work well.

But only when playing WITHOUT looping,...
When i m looping a section, it starts ok, but when it arrives at the end of the loop and comes back to the start, it kind of stutters, isn t on time anymore , so plays in sync but with an offset , and stays there even if the looping mode keeps on ,... huh... looping

...

ok i can command the tr8s with a cubase midi track, but i admit having been rather attracted at the prospect of programming XOX patterns, and that is NOT working how i hoped!...

update for those interested...

i traced the problem to a simple clic to turn off the "midi clock follows project position" in the cubase synchronisation menu!!!

:bouncy: :bouncy: :D :D :P :P

it s now how i wanted it to be, meaning xox roland style pattern programming slaved to my DAW!!!

have a good one
