You are right, I have a guitar builder friend (he's made his living building and repairing guitars for close on 50 years) and his workshop is still centred around an old kitchen table.......... He even lived and worked on a narrow boat for a few years.

But there are times when having the right tools and jigs makes it so much easier and quicker, despite the working environment limitations.

Undoubtedly true  my pal didn't take much heavy stuff on the boat with him but couldn't live without his flatbed belt sander which is long enough to sand a fingerboard flat....

And then you need your radiused sanding blocks to make it unflat again! :)

Colin has me sanding those fingerboards with a long straight block, using a straightedge and a fret clamp caul of the right radius for checking as I go. I find it very theraputic. But I am sad like that...

My pal sands the radius in the same way just using the belt sander instead of a long block. Many years of experience I guess and I assume he gets the final finished shape it by hand

Very fascinating!

Adrian, may I ask - does Colin make guitars in the Midlands area? If it's who I think it is then he made me a quite exceptional and rather gorgeous resonator a few years ago. He is very talented.

Been great reading about what you're doing!

Yes that will be him, he’s in Long Eaton. Would be nice to see a pic of yours?

Yeah, the leaves are really, really nice. The fingerboard is snakewood as are the tuning pegs. Looks great but more importantly, sounds great! I use it for the odd dobro bit but also alot as I would a steel string guitar as it seems to cut through the mix really nicely on jazzier/strummier stuff.

Sorry to take over the thread Adrian! I will butt out now but as you may have gathered I am very enthusiastic about resonators :)

Please say hi to Col from me and best of luck with your project. You are doing great!

That’s a beaut Chris. What is the wood used for the body?

Supplementary question - do you have a pickup fitted and if so which one?

It's actually a papier-mâché body made from £50 notes Chris found under his mattress.

Hi Adrian.

I think it's maple. No pickup, I mike it up with a pair of Royers.
