When I started the project I thought it probably wouldn't be worth spending a lot of money on hardware, on the basis that if the guitar turned out OK but would benefit from better hardware I could always upgrade.

So I took a punt on some very inexpensive bits from China. Cone (not pictured), cover, spider, tailpiece, bridge and grills all for £45:

The cone was a cast one so not very good, which is OK as I already have a spun cone from a Dobro, albeit slightly damaged. The spider, cover, tailpiece and grills seem OK. Might try the bridge but it would be easy enough to make one.

A last pic from the workshop - a couple of guitars being worked on.

The one on the left is a Keefe guitar from 2011, in for a setup. It's quite plain looking but has an amazing sound. It's not subtle, but fantastic for fingerstyle blues - fast, clean, focused, balanced and punchy.

The one on the right, the body of the Taylor was smashed somehow and the owner asked Colin to make a new one.

Hey Adrian,

I found the pikkies Col sent me when building the dobro. I uploaded them to FB in case you're interested...

Yeah, please do. Tell him it's sounding great! (I use it alot for strumming stuff too as it records better than my Martin).

Look forward to hearing yours.

Me too but it may be some time... a day a month means slow progress. Ah well.

January progress report....

Have now finished bracing the top. The basic scheme is lateral brace behind the hole, lateral brace in front of the hole, lateral brace in front of the grills, reinforcement around the hole, diagonal bracing around hole. The rear diagonals lie alongside the reinforcement and notch into the sides. The front diagonals lie on to of the reinforcement, lap over the rear diagonals and notch into the front lateral brace. Got it?

It feels very stiff (the guitar top...)

So now there is nothing for it but to glue the top on. Now where did I put the guitar body?

As with the back I have to plane the lining and front and back blocks down to provide a nice gluing surface. Then cut notches in the sides for the brace ends, making sure that the centre line on the top aligns with the centre line of the body. A quick dry clamping to make sure everything fits and is aligned, then out with the Titebond and soft clamps.

With some help from my beautiful assistant I first clamp over the brace ends..

And here are all the clamps in place..
