Dots and plus signs on classical guitar pieces

Postby aekoi » Wed Jun 06, 2018 10:48 am

Hi there,

I've been playing some classical pieces and I noticed some marking which I am unfamiliar with. The markings occur above or below notes on the stave, and look like small dots (either one or two) and small plus signs. Any idea what these mean?

(The dots are not staccato dots or note lengthening dots)

...seems the plus sign may indicate a tapped note...

Thanks for the reply. The pieces are Baroque pieces, + sign occurs often on open strings so it's unlikely to be tapping.

They could possibly indicate the right hand picking.

Have you got or have access to recordings of those pieces? That might give you a clue.

Could the + be a harmonic?

Technically, it's PIMA -- pulgar, indice, medio, anular; and thumb. :)
