David Gilmour guitar auction
David Gilmour is auctioning off some of the guitars he's used throughout the years for his charitable foundation. There's a short video here where he describes some of them and what he used them for which some may find of interest:

If only he could auction off a bit of his insight and skill!

Take my advice, I'm not using it.

Re: David Gilmour guitar auction

That's a lot of classic guitars - the Black Strat, the Red, the 0001, the Les Paul Gold Top, the acoustics .... wow!
I suppose that if you're DG, you'll always sound like DG regardless of the guitar so these are just nice 'things' to him. Fair enough. Still sad that such iconic guitars won't be used ever again - just hung on a wall / stuck in a vault..

"... to other people who will find joy, and perhaps create something new".
If only, they'll likely all go to wealthy investors who'll never even touch them.

It's only wealthy investors who will be able to afford them

Finally taking this recording lark seriously (and recording my Gypsy Jazz CD)........
Re: David Gilmour guitar auction
Most likely either Joe Bonemassa, one of those guitar museums or Hard Rock Cafe (so it can languish on a case on the wall).

Re: David Gilmour guitar auction
I was surprised that in his position Gilmour didn't just fund the cause from his own pocket and keep the guitars. I know I'd struggle to part with equipment if I'd had a history like that with it.
That said, as he recently bought a house in Hove maybe he hasn't got much dosh left
Sadly, I agree that the "wealthy investor"-types will likely hoover up the goods rather than them being used for anything musical.

Christies' website puts an estimate of $100,000 - $150,000 on the Black Strat. I'm sure it'll go for a lot more than that.

Which considering it is no longer in original condition means the price tag is almost entirely down to who owned it and what it was used for.
I'd be lucky to get 10% of that price if I had one to sell.

...ay, I'm thinking of relics like Peter Green's Les Paul, which reportedly sold for $2M. Bob Dylan's Strat reached nearly $1M.
Most Expensive Guitars Ever Sold: The Top 10
I'm guessing $250K+

The Peter Green/Gary Moore LP sold for a lot less than $2m - that was just the (far too high) asking price. As a result it didn't sell for several years. Then Kirk Hammet paid around $1m for it. Still a lot though.

Astonishing, I bet Phil Taylor cried when he heard especially after the saga getting the Black Strat back.
Does this mean he's retiring I wonder, I can understand auctioning the Red, Martin, Gretsch and LP but the Black Strat feels pretty final.
Unless the copies are that good...

The copies are certainly 'good enough'. He actually preferred the sound of the neck pickup on the Fender DG Strat compared to the Black Strat's one.

Re: David Gilmour guitar auction
Possibly, though Clapton was upfront in saying Blackie was basically done and couldn't take another refret so save keeping it for prosperity it wouldnt be used much, if all, again.
I though The Black Strat had more life remaining as he'd swapped necks but perhaps the last 2/3 tours since he brought it back for Live8 have worn that too.
Or as Wonks points out, He was happier with a copy after all (bit like Andy Summers was with his Tele).

I guess in both cases they were just looking for the maximum return for their respective charities.

If you aren't going to gig, write or record any more, then you might as well move them on. I'm sure to DG they are mainly just tools. Well loved tools maybe, but he knows that the real magic is in his head and fingers, not the guitars.

"Look, dear, you said I couldn't buy any more guitars unless I got rid of some, so..."
