Ok, it's not a guitar...

But it is a very interesting fretted instrument (not a banjo):

A good mate is a classical guitarist (and teacher and composer) and, for a good while he owned and played IIRC Renascence Lute. I can see why the Theorbo came into existence, the Lute is a very quiet, subtle instrument suited to drawing rooms not theatres.

It's a shame it's not 13 string as that's one more than 12.
14 is just pure extravagance, showing off.

I've actually seen this one before. Honestly that thing probably has 50 strings or so and you will use 6-7 max anyway.

Thirteen thousand dollars. Ouch. But so-o-o-o-o lovely. Imagine changing strings on it? There goes a hundred bucks. Or two.

He said the cylinder that the strings wrap around when the instrument is folded keeps everything in tune. It might be true, but it's counterintuitive to what passes for my brain. If it works the way he says, it's very clever.

The cylinder doesn't directly keep it in tune. It keeps the strings under reasonable tension so that the windings don't loosen at the tuners, so there's far less chance of the strings slipping and the tuning drifting. Also keeps the strings from slipping out of the nut slots etc. You'll probably get about as much tension variation with it as operating a standard Strat trem, so providing the slots are smooth, it should stay pretty much in tune, but you may still have the odd occasion where some small adjustment is necessary.
