Eventide Rose, anyone tried it?

Postby Arpangel » Tue Jul 23, 2019 9:17 am

I'm going to order one of these today, just on spec. The description sounds amazing, 13 secs delay in normal mode, with feedback (Frippertronics!!!) plus loads of modulation possibilities.
And a switchable guitar/line input, that's really useful. It's a mono unit, but that's OK, my synth is mono so...
Not all delay pedals or loopers lend themselves to Frippertronics very well, you need a basic, long delay, with controllable feedback, not, a looper. You need precise control over the decay of what went before.
I believe this is a digital pedal at heart, but it does have an analogue modulation section.
Anyone got one already? Impressions?

Sounds interesting, but it looks ugly! :)

I am using a BOSS RV-500 as my base delay/reverb pedal. You can get very long delays and reverbs (all of which sound superb) (crazy long reverbs; not sure with delays as its based on tempo and note length, but you can probably get several seconds worth of delay) with multiple configurations of mono parallel/series, dual mono, and stereo. Plus MIDI clock and CC.

The general idea behind this forum is that you say “I’m thinking of buying item A and I’m expecting it to do this, that and the other, any suggestions?”
Then other people chime in with their thoughts confirming your original idea or telling you about a much better item B or to save your money until an original analogue piece of gear is available or a soon to be released piece of kit they’ve heard about. :D

I haven't ordered it, I've decided the colour is it's main selling point, and the illuminated rose.

That’s better, now breathe deeply, calm yourself and wait for a flood of contradictory advice to come in, then spend the money.

Thank you sir, I've calmed myself (euphemism) and I'm standing by for contradictory advice...

Digitech's JamMan Delay has 16s of delay, plus looping, SD card slot, etc. Probably a lot cheaper than the Rose, if you can find one.

No feedback control though, which is a prerequisite for Arpy.

A lot of people think loopers are OK for Frippertronics type stuff, but they aern't, as Wonks says, you have to have a feedback control to emulate the decaying tape signal, the last thing you want is a repeating loop that goes on forever at the same volume. That's the beauty of
Frippertronics, things die away allowing you to add new, different things.
I've decided, I like the look of the Rose, it's very psychedelic, it'll go well with my EHX reverb!
But I'm not 100% convinced there aern't any cheaper alternatives. My favourite unit for this function used to be the BEL BD80s, I had that for many years, until I grew a bit fed up with this type of thing. They go for around £300/£400 so the price is similar to the Rose. Plus point of the Rose is it's nice and compact.

Contradictory Advice here at your service!
Cripes, man, don’t buy that thing! Instead pay too much money for an iPad and then a few pounds for any number of apps that do exactly what you want and in stereo if you want.

Next week I’m doing a gig with that very setup only the "looper" for lack of better word, is actually 5 loopers in one each with their own tempo and length depending on memory, (I have a Chinese pipa track preloaded that is 2’15") synced or unsynced plus plugins on the input and output.
I could end up in Fripper-heaven or Fripper-hell!

And if a curmudgeonly, set in his ways old fart like me can manage it, then anybody can.
Yes you are right, it’s not Eventide though!

Surely the correct approach here is to buy it anyway and then justify it to yourself afterwards?
Possibly follow up by discovering that it didn't work as you expected but it will subsequently become essential in another role 6 months down the line. :)

That's exactly what happened with my Buchla, how did you know?
