12 String tuners

Postby Alba » Mon Apr 13, 2020 10:26 pm

Hi... wonder if anyone can recommend some open gear tuners for a slotted headstock that won't break the bank?

Something like these https://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Slotted_Peghead_Guitar_Tuning_Machines/Golden_Age_Restoration_Tuners_for_12-String_Slotted_Peghead_Guitar.html but a bit more reasonably priced.

Thanks.

I haven't used them, but Allparts do have a budget set at around £20. They're out of stock in the UK so could be a while until they can get them (Houston in the USA is in lockdown), but there is a pic with dimensions here on the product link.

https://www.allparts.uk.com/products/12 ... on-a-strip

You need to be careful and make sure the dimensions match the holes on your headstock. But to put the price of the StewMac set in context, Allparts have a modern Schaller 12 string set of individual tuners at £144.50.

The key thing is to get some accurate measurements from your existing guitar. Your choices are restricted by what is available in the right size. And the Allparts set have slightly larger gaps between posts than the StewMac set.

If I spot any other sets, I'll post again.

Thanks, Zen... The Stewmac ones are fine price wise but the shipping makes them a bit prohibitive. I can't see how else to get those Stewmac bits and bobs from UK suppliers.

I'm not too fussed about dimensions as this is a new build of sorts, well, not a new guitar but a new headstock.

There are heaps of these on eBay but its so hard to know what you're getting.

To kind of put the whole price thing into context, I can get two sets of enclosed Wilkinson tuners for under 45 quid. That sort of quality would be fine for this job.

I just fancied a more classic look.

WD Music also do some for £44 inc postage.
Plastic buttons: https://www.wdmusic.co.uk/hardware-part ... tton-p4956

Chrome buttons: https://www.wdmusic.co.uk/hardware-part ... rome-p4958

The one thing I've found out recently is that those vintage 3- and 6-on-a-strip tuners have retained the same post hole, spacing, post size and screw hole locations for getting on for 100 years.

Not all of them Wonky, I was unable to find a set of classical tuners that were a direct replacement for my mates classical as his had non standard hole spacing.

I should have made it clearer that I was talking about non-classical tuners.
