My Boss Chorus CE-2 appears to have bitten the dust

Postby alfredo » Fri Jul 24, 2020 5:19 pm

My beloved green label MIJ CE-2 has done that typical thing of working perfectly right up to the point where it doesn't.

Brand new battery (Duracell Plus), guitar leads check out, LED comes on, but there's only a sort of white noisey sound - no guitar or anything else whether it's on or off. I was just wondering if this is at all fixable (from my brilliant description!) or whether it's time to lay it to rest?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Pete

It should be fixable. All the parts are still available. It's just a case of identifying which element has stopped playing, and replacing it... but if you're getting no audio at all then it's either the Q1 input transistor or the IC1 (4558) op-amp, half of which forms part of the input stage, and the other half drives the output.

Did you change anything prior to it dying -- like run it off a different external power supply, or plug in anything different as an input?

The schematic is available here:

Thanks Hugh (and apologies for taking so long to reply!). Is this something a good amp tech might be able to sort - my practical skills leave an awful lot to be desired, to put it mildly.

Yes, I'd have thought so. Anyone with electronics skills, experience and standard test equipment.

Not familiar with it myself, but it looks pretty straightforward to me, and they even give setup instructions.

Best procedure is apply a signal, then with a 'scope find out where it disappears.
