Hurdy-Gurdy Rock Guitar? (Hat Tip to Donovan ;-)

Postby dubbmann » Thu Aug 13, 2020 7:31 pm

Hi all,

Did you ever wake up in the morning and ask yourself "I wonder what AC/DC sounds like played on a hurdy-gurdy?" Me neither but courtesy of the magic that is YouTube's suggestion algorithm this vid popped up in my feed. It's probably a bad sign that I immediately went to Google and searched for used hurdy-gurdies. You've been warned.

Cheers,

Bookmarked earlier...

Just listened. Then listened to part 2.

For 20+ years I've been tempted to build a hardy gurdy or an electric hardy gurdy. I am further tempted.

Thanks

A Hardy-Gardy is just a Hurdy-Gurdy after 6 pints of cider.

Am I the only one who could see a serious Health and Safety issue there? She needs to tie her hair back because all the way through I was on the edge of my seat expecting her to get tangled up in the handle.

When I first saw the video I thought it was a wind-up.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

Although AC/DC did use bagpipes...

(My favourite heavy rock gurdy player is Storm Seeker's ex-player Patty Gurdy.)

Does a hurdy-gurdy always sound like that or is there some guitar-like distortion being applied to the sound?

That's quite processed. If you want to hear a real pro on an electro-acoustic gurdy through a distortion pedal, check out Gregory Jolivet.

You know I wasn't expecting to spend so much time playing hurdy gurdy videos, but this really is a fascinating instrument, and I disappeared down the rabbit hole.

Great stuff!

Oh wow - now I'm in love. This is gorgeously aggressive! 8-)

Not my cup of tea. I think I've developed hurdy immunity.
