Stomp box switch caps - slim versions?

Postby The Elf » Tue Aug 18, 2020 3:06 pm

I just bought a pack of stomp switch caps, but I've discovered they don't fit. :headbang:

They fit my Helix pedalboard perfectly, but I actually need them for my Morningstar MC8. I mistakenly thought all stomp switches were identical, but it seems not; the ones on the MC8 are slimmer.

Anyone know what I need to look for and/or where I can buy some coloured pedal caps for my MC8?

Not something I've looked at before. I had a quick search and all I could find was this...

https://www.jedspeds.co.uk/product-page ... witch-knob

In The UK, and the description says its held in place with 2 grubscrews so might fit a slightly smaller cap.

Thanks, Andy. They look pretty much like what I have right now.

I've contacted Morningstar and they have asked me to send a photo of the MC8 I have! :wtf: So maybe this one has some non-standard switches!

Good luck. I've had the MC6 or MC8 on my 'interested' list for a while.

I can't speak for the MC6, but the MC8 is a very capable device. It's amazing what you can do with these things. Multiple actions for press, release, long press, double-tap... and the incredibly flexible 'omni ports'... My needs are relatively simple, but I can see that this will grow with me.

It's only marred (IMHO) by the way the pedals don't line up with their labels. I'm finding myself hitting the wrong switch a bit too often, hence my needing some colour coding. It's no biggie - I'll plonk some stickers on if all else fails, but coloured caps would make a big difference for me.

I love the coloured light bands around the Helix pedals - it's only now I'm realising how much I rely on them and wishing the MC8 had the same!

Thanks Elf. Fortunately I won't need to make a decision for a while. I'm also looking at the ML5 with five MIDI switchable loops. So when the time comes I'll work out exactly what I need to control and how, and then make my choice.

And for anyone else looking for a device to put at the heart of a MIDI system, they are definitely worth investigating. Excellent documentation on their website.

I'm using the Mooer caps which have so far fit everything I've tried (MXR, EHX, Mooer, TC Electronic and my Laney FS2).

They could be packed out by adding a little Araldite if needed - a thin wipe on the inside edge would do it.

Cheap as too which is always a bonus.

Thanks, mate. Can you give me a link to follow, so I know which ones specifically?

I'm a bit worried that you say these fit everything else, because the ones I've bought fit everything else I have too! Trouble is that the ones that fit most everything else are WAY too big for the MC8. a bit of Araldite wouldn't cut it.

The ones that Morningstar have pointed me to are 10 Dollars per cap, plus postage and import duty/admin!! :headbang:

At the moment a few coloured stickers are looking very appealing!

These have a grub screw and a rubber insert. Could you do something similar with rubber/plastic tubing over the Morningstar switch cap to fit the caps you already have?

Sure thing; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mooer-Footswit ... B01MRA154Z

Like I say these fit everything I've tried but I reckon a little Araldite or super glue would pad them out if too big.

Actually reading Andy's post noting they have rubber inserts, some shrink tubing around the switch cap would pad nicely and be an easily removed mod.

Thanks.

Those are pretty much the same as the ones I have. It would take a heck of a lot of padding to get them to fit - and I doubt they would stay put.

For problems like this I often visit a model shop. You might be able to find some thick walled brass/aluminium/plastic pipe to sleeve the switch cap more rigidly.
