Pat Metheny made some classic music on the fretless guitar. A unique expressive sound.

But note that it is all single line stuff.

When you pick up a fretless guitar you realize that chords just don't work! The frets allow you to finger the chord since the fingers don't have to all line up.

But on fretless, you can't get your fingers where they need to be to get the intonation right.
The you realize that the purpose of frets is so you can actually play chords!

I'm keeping my frets!

A lot of fretless players use chorus or detune effects. Only a cynic (me, for example) would suggest that this is to cover up any approximate intonation.

I've often wondered if that's why opera singers effect such extreme vibrato :D

I find intonation on electric upright bass easier than fretless electric bass guitar for that reason

On an upright bass, you basically hang your thumb off the neck joint for higher registers, which gives you a point of reference. A fretless bass guitar seems to have about 150 metres of fretboard with no clues.

It's lucky that bass players are so effortlessly cool, otherwise it would end in tears.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

I wish... but no its an NS Wave EUB, Chinese made and under £1k (£650 used in my case). Sounds great and relatively easy to play given my wimpy guitarists fingers :D

Hamer made a couple, Andy Summers had/had one but in some respects it probably in the 12 string category for a lot of players. Something cool for a song or two and useful in the studio but probably not something you'd ever see become a common market piece.

Don't mention...

(Hewesy mentioned the Common Market but I think he got away with it).

My old bass player buddy reckoned when he went from Precision (see what they did there?) to 4 string wardrobe he was advised to play it exclusively for a year before taking it to a gig.

I think he gave it a week before we went busking.

Nor me - is this the old Startpage proxy link issue again?

If so, reminder: link to the actual image, and not the proxy image ;)
