Luthier recommendations Essex (ish) area...

Postby Lala » Tue Apr 27, 2021 4:54 pm

Hi,

The luthier that has worked on my guitars for over 20+ years is no longer taking setup work as he's trying to get all his build orders completed before he retires!

I feel a bit like I did when my dentist of 30 years retired and you have start afresh with someone else and build that level of trust again

Does anyone have any direct experience of these three companies...

https://www.maloneguitars.com/

https://www.jbguitars.co.uk/

https://felineguitars.com/

The first two are much closer to me, under an hour, Feline is more of trip.

End of the day I know I'll probably just have to dip my toe in the water but would be interested to hear anyone's experience, good or bad...particularly bad lol

Many thanks.

Only ever heard of Feline, but have no idea of what they're like. Nearer is obviously better. Can you arrange to visit the two Essex luthiers, ask to see some of their set-up and modification work to see what you think?

Take along a guitar of yours and ask them to evaluate it.

I'd not heard of any of them tbh but found them after doing a little searching online - Feline cropped up a few times, just a bit of a pain to get to.

All three have good testimonials, one guy who'd used Malone said the bass played better after the cracked neck was repaired than it did before, which is how I came to find the guy I've been using all these years - a guitar teacher I'd spoken to put he's LP in the hold for a trip to Ireland and it came out with a cracked headstock, when he got it back it genuinely had never played better apparently.

Got three to be looked at, two full setups with fret dresses and one setup and fret dress but I want it setup for altered tuning.

Like the idea of an evaluation, tbh the Essex based ones are relatively close to each other so could get opinions from both before deciding
