Yep, it's a piezo element (they can be bought for pennies on eBay, yet are extremely useful as contact mics when fed into a high impedance to avoid losing the bass end).

Just because you know what I'm talking about, it doesn't mean I do!

Turning Hurricane Data Into Music

For my first post of 2018 in this thread, it's sometimes worth remembering that to create new sounds may just be a matter of thinking of some new data to interpret in audio terms.

Can listening to storms help us understand them better? A meteorologist and a music technologist think so - here's a Sonification of Hurricane Sandy, from Mark Ballora:

REC/PLAY

"An installation/instrument made with a stripped down double cassette-deck with motor and spindle mechanism. Fabric belts fan out of the rotating spindles and into the space to activate an assortment of sound generating elements – rustling paper, ringing glass jars, tapped wood; teasing out from humble materials their inherent musicality."

As a sound designer myself, I'm a sucker for automated machine sounds, especially intricate ones like these 8-)

Digital Music Box - The Premiere

"An oversized music box takes to the streets, packed in vintage furniture and cranked by passersby, in this Portuguese sound art piece. It’s the latest work of Nuno Santos, who has gone viral in social media with this enchanting demo video.

There’s a lot of clever engineering work in this award-winning project. It’s an achievement in packing a sound system into a mobile form factor using vintage furniture. It’s a great physical computing project, complete with that huge crank. And it’s a great example of what you can do with pisound and Raspberry Pi – adding high-fidelity audio functionality to the ubiquitous, dirt-cheap tiny PC."

Lovely :)
Took me a moment to recognise the Yann Tiersen tune though.

Interactive sound pendulum evokes stream of consciousness

"„Gedankenpendel“ is an interactive sound installation with the aim to draw the visitors attention to his conciseness and his constant flow of thoughts. Various mental states are symbolized with sound and can be discovered by interacting with the sound sculpture. The installation consists of a sound-ball made out of 12 speakers hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the room. The visitor is able to interact with the sound object by swinging it like a pendulum. "

In the suggested videos was a fascinating video from the 'smarter everyday' guy about the sounds of the Falcon heavy launch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImoQqNyRL8Y

DEEP WEB - kinetic audiovisual installation and performance

Sometimes (generally after a huge amount of preparatory work behind the scenes) sonic and visuals blend together perfectly.

And thus we come to Deep Web, a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound.

The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.

Enjoy!

I wonder how freaky that would be to watch as the only person in the room without the sound?

PIANO MIGRATIONS - KATHY HINDE audio-visual artist -
"Inspired by behaviours and phenomena found in nature and the everyday — working with sound, light, image, sculpture, location.

Piano Migrations transforms the inside of a recycled piano into a kinetic sound sculpture. Projected videos of dozens of small birds landing on telegraph lines appear to flutter and settle on its strings: the movements of the birds trigger small machines to twitch, causing the piano strings to resonate. In Piano Migrations nature appears to control machines as they come together to create a delicate and ever-changing musical score."

This is a truly fascinating yet musical creation! 8-)
