Now I don't very often get inspired by a stomp box, but this INDUSTRIALECTRIC 4046-M synth pedal is rather special:

Here's the origin of its secret:

"Ever heard of PLL synth? Phase Lock Loop? This is one of those synths... The VCO tracks your incoming signal and splits it into two harmonic sections and then route it through a primitive modulation section. The results are absolutely crushing! Here shown on bass, the 4046-M brings you square wave fuzz, sub-octaves, envelope filters, phasing, hollow and metalic sounds that can evolve and get out of hand really easily... "

Nice!!

This is what I love to see - a novel twist on an existing instrument.

Behold - Electric Gongs!!

This is a fascinating study for the sound designer -

I particularly loved number 5. The “Distorted Drum Kits and Synthesizers”:

Anyone Suffering from Creative Block Will Relate to This Video

Each scene begins as pristine as a blank page that slowly disintegrates into an all-consuming black hole. "This black hole, or void, represents the little nagging in the back of our minds when we create that questions whether what we are doing is good or bad":

Here's an in-depth and thought-provoking guide on how to put together the component parts of Spaceship sound effects - well worth a read!

Here's another interesting post for sound designers

"Swarovski Designers of the Future 2016: Yuri Suzuki

Hitting the high notes. Designer Yuri Suzuki's Swarovski Designers of the Future installation "Sharevari" utilizes bespoke crystal bowls to transform vibrations into an acoustic composition that accompanies a visually arresting installation."

A little too self-consciously 'arty' for my liking, but there's no denying the beauty of the sounds ;)

Now what a wonderful way to visualise music, apparently using 1000's of carefully orchestrated CGI lights:

I always get inspired when I hear a totally new instrument being played, so here for your delectation is a Cristal Baschet solo played by Thomas Bloch:

If you want or need to create completely new and unique sounds, you don't always have to resort to a large modular synth setup.

Instead you could adopt the mentality of a sound designer creating an installation, and come up with a physical assembly of components that generates new sounds of itself, as Daniel Bisig and Philippe Kocher did:

"Sheet Music is a sound installation whose physical setup consists of several piezoelectric film speakers distributed in space. The sound is generated by time-delayed recurrent networks. The installation setup embodies some of the algorithmic principles: each speaker corresponds to a specific point in the network and renders the network's activity at this point audible. In addition, the physical distances among the speakers are proportional to the time delay applied to the signals between those points."

Just as importantly as the technical aspects, it sounds totally fascinating in an organic sort of way:

Enjoy!
