Naughty Yamaha - secret acoustic piano on Reface CP!

Postby Escapegoat » Thu May 04, 2017 9:35 am

Well, well... there's an undocumented secret acoustic piano tone on the Reface CP. While Yamaha gave everyone a 'Toy Piano' setting alongside the EPs and CP tones, there is a power-up mode that allows you to use a proper piano.

Basically:
1) switch CP off
2) put the voice selector between any two settings
3) power up
4) enjoy your nice sounding acoustic piano

See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/c ... tic_piano/

Listen here: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/12604415-post106.html (played by a proper size keyboard!)

Yamaha claims it knows nothing about it!

Wow - it's not often musicians get something for nothing hardware-wise ;)

And it DOES sound good judging by that MP3! 8-)

Could it be the same acoustic piano model as on the 'proper' CPs?

I wonder if there's a Yamaha engineer who's been summoned to a "meeting with no biscuits". He'll have to explain how an algorithm that was only supposed to used in development somehow got left in the production firmware. Good man!

Surely it should be 'sneaky Yamaha' rather than 'naughty'. I mean, there's NO way that this got released without someone knowing. The PCM data was all in there - and that can't be an accident.

The only way it could have slipped through QA was through _very_ bad testing by the software engineers. And sloppy usability testing. And I just don't see a large, Japanese corporation doing that.

Still, good news for anyone who has one. Which is nice.

Would be nice if the SOS team could get an answer out of Yamaha on this?

A few owners are very happy to find this, but concerned that a future firmware update would remove this 'unofficial' voice. Whereas a firmware update that swapped the Toy Piano to this (so the Toy Piano became the hidden patch) would definitely go down well.

Martin

Hi, I'm the guy who found the sound by accident whilst on holiday in Australia! https://youtu.be/JVmmhfbYmGE

I started threads on Gearslutz and yamahasynth.com and yamahaforums.co.uk Thanks to users on Gearslutz they figured out how to recreate it because I couldn't.

Yamaha UK support said they had no idea. I don't think they really believed me as I was the only one who had reported it.

A Japanese guy I contacted via twitter was on the original reface software team. He preferred not to talk via twitter but said he didn't put anything in there that he knew of and said it could be an 'init' developer mode. But to continue via official Yamaha contact as he didn't want to discuss further.

So I'm really happy the news has got out there but Yamaha have yet to come up with anything in response other than we don't know.

Got a reply from Yamaha UK.

Looks like they are under orders to keep it hush hush.

"
Hi Adam
Thank you for letting me know
I have had a reply from Japan to say that there is a hidden piano voice inside Reface CP, but would not say how to acquire this voice or pass on information on selecting this voice
So now that I'm aware I'm not allowed to let customers know. How frustrating
Kind regards
Dusty

Best Regards

Your Yamaha Custom...."

Are they unaware of this thing called the internet?

That cat's out of the bag, so they might as well 'fess up.

Who's going to be the first owner to desolder the toy piano position on the type knob and see if it works as a null position on boot up? Not me. I've got previous history of ruining things with a soldering iron!

It almost seems like a mistake was made, or a joke by a disgruntled (now ex-)employee, and the toy piano should have been the 'Easter egg' and not the other way round.

I hope sound on sound might be able to get a response out of Yamaha UK/USA/JP? If they plan to continue to keep this feature enabled and what's the story behind it.

Only if they see it as a bug that should have been ironed out.

I'd would obviously prefer the acoustic piano stays on board and gets some firmware support to write it to the Toy Piano slot.
