How about a 'One Synth' challenge?

Postby Dave B » Sat Mar 31, 2018 11:25 am

Anyone up for this?

The idea is to make a tune (original or cover - let's not get picky here) and basically only use 1 synth for the arrangements, so that you actually stretch a single synth to get the most out of it. I know that I like doing that sometimes - it's all too easy to get stuck in a rut and just call up a handful of sounds from a bunch of well known machines.

I'm guessing that drum machines / samples could be ok, but the idea would be to do all _synth_ arranging on a single unit. No limits here, so if you want to use every engine on a Kronos, or a full modular system, or even just a single 101, then it's all fine. Just document what you use so that others can get an idea of the kit.

If some people are up for this, then I'm happy to act as host / moderator. No real prize here, just the fun of it. (although I could do a celebratory kit kat at Synthfest if we really want to)

:)

Anybody?

Doe this mean, one synth of the participants choice?
Or one synth that's nominated and everyone has to use the *same* synth..?

(Note, KVR regularly do these one synth challenges...)

Can we use FX, or do all sound sources and FX have to come from the same synth?

Ok..

My "Here's one I prepared earlier" moment

Here's a cover of Depeche Mode's "No Disco" using just a Nyborg 24 for everything..

Nice one Simon :)

I would suggest that it should be entirely the one synth. That's including all effects and percussion - if the synth can't do percussion well you'd just have to do without (or fake it).

I'm not keen on the idea of a designated synth. That's the trouble with the KVR one synth contest. If you don't happen to have that one, you can't join in. As a result I was only just able to sneak in one year, as Yoshimi at that time was considered still close enough to ZynAddSubFX to be regarded the same one.

Oh, and this was my entry then (in June 2011) :

As well as putting it up on SC a few years later, I demoed the finale at last year's SynthFest :)

Oh no - you definitely get to chose your own synth! I'm not some kind of deranged control freak ... on most days anyway...

I was actually thinking of handling this where the participants PM me the details and a link to the file and I'll host them 'anonymously' on soundcloud so that there is an added bit of fun - guess the synth and see if you're right. We could do something like make this a sticky thread for April and publish the results at the end of the month and then the full details a few days later.

Or is that overcomplicating?

(it would mean that Chevvers and Fol would have to knock something else up ... oops - should have floated that idea first).

I had a CD once with tracks from loads of major artists who had all programmed something into the 01/W. Ah - here's a link to it ... http://www.voices-in-the-net.de/the_best_of_the_01w.htm

Katoh-san from Keith Emerson I recall being absolutely superb.

No pressure, guys!

I like this idea :)

P.S.
I'd never try to get two bites of the cherry, by submitting to two competitions.

So ... is that a 'no' for the 'anonymous' element of the challenge?? ;)

Why not make the synth produce the vocals?

Well now, this whole idea seems to have jump-started a bit of inspiration... lasting till about 1am
So, I have a decent frameworks in place. What sort of timescale are we talking about, and what is your preferred file type?

I think we stick to the idea of 'April Challenge' to give folks a few weeks to sign up and actually do the work. Given that it's going to involve a fair bit of multitracking for some, I think 4 weeks or so seems only fair.

I think I've sorted a piece of music to do. Now to just work out which synth to use. Do I go for something obvious? Or something oblique to try and trip people up? Oooh. It's exciting.

Edit : sorry - forgot to answer. I can take most filetypes, but I supect wav, aiff, mp3, m4a, etc are going to be easier to get into soundcloud. If anyone wants to do flac or ogg, I've no objection. Just remember that soundcloud will create an mp3 type file for streaming...

I love the way you think that I still have a K2000 kicking around after all these years.

Actually ... I do, but it had an accident so I need to check it. If it works, then it may well be a donor synth for another gear head who wants to resurrect his...

Made a start on something...

whats the ruling on FX, daw automation etc

Have to say, my Hi-Hats are barely passable even with a 'throw in the kitchen sink approach' to processing

Another good question and the answer is : all ok, go for it. If we said 'no' then we'd be missing out on a load of classic techniques. And modulars often have nice ring mods, delays and phasers, etc, some of which are truly awesome and an important part of the sound.

Likewise automation is fine - if you can automate something clever sounding then that's valid to me.

As to anything else, I'll leave it up to the posters' discretion. :)

You say "sign up". To where?
If this is going on Soundcloud, I would recommend submitting in a lossless format. Their streamer works at 128k mp3, and even if you submit work there in that format and rate, it still gets re-converted :(
